"Adam Johnson's ball in is brilliant, van Aarnholt times his run to perfection, gets the ball out from under his feet and drills in his shot. It flies into the corner to give Sunderland the lead.

"But look, Sam Allardyce is absolutely furious! Sunderland just fell asleep having gone in front. The ball was fired in by Eriksen and Cattermole will know he should have cleared it. He's paid a big price."

    Christian Eriksen

Tell you what, I've done a right job on this one! Within a minute, Tottenham are level. And you need to check this one out ASAP. Technically, it is Christian Eriksen's goal, from a shot from the edge of the box, but that does not do justice to the sheer lunacy of Lee Cattermole's attempted clearance on the line, which he somehow steers into the roof of his own net. As my primary school PE football coach used to say to me, "just hoof it lad!"

Now you have a very good reason to go and read the Tottenham v Sunderland live text.

Job done. I'm taking credit for that one. Just seconds after suggesting Tottenham v Sunderland was dull, the visitors open the scoring through Patrick van Aarnholt's low drive from inside the box.

This week, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke of his admiration for former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, calling him "the John Lennon of football". The two sides face each other in the Premier League tomorrow.

Off the back of that, we would like to know what other musicians do you liken to current footballers? If Ferguson is John Lennon does that make Brian Kidd Ringo Starr? And if Liverpool's McManaman, Redknapp et al were the 1990's footballing Spice Girls, who are the 2016 equivalent?

    Trevor Sinclair

"Leicester are overachieving, no one expected them to do what they did last season. The team spirit means so much for a team, and can take a team so far."

  8. Expectation levelspublished at 13:10

Aston Villa v Leicester (17:30 GMT)

I think we've all got used to the idea that Leicester City are full-on title challengers this season. Not that this in any way normalizes the fact - their first-half performance this season remains a stunning piece of work.

Now, though, they have to deal with expectation - the fact that people now assume there are certain games they will win. Today offers one of those games as they head to bottom club Aston Villa for the evening Premier League kick-off...

"Harry Kane always aims for the bottom corners, rather than hitting the top of the goal. It's something that I know he's worked on a lot, copying the great Jimmy Greaves who used to do the same."

  11. Saints sign Austinpublished at 13:00

The formalities have been dealt with, the deal signed. All we need now is an official signing photo of Charlie Austin in a Southampton shirt. Maybe holding a ball.... in front of a stock training ground snap. Hang on...

  12. Football League previewpublished at 12:56

    League Two

We've lost one game to the elements already in League Two as Accrington's Wham Stadium pitch is too frozen to host the visit of Portsmouth. Poor Stanley fans haven't seen their team play at home since 14 November! However, 10 games are currently still on, including the leaders Plymouth against Stevenage and second-placed Northampton against struggling Dagenham and Redbridge.

There is a relegation six-pointer at bottom club York, where 20th-placed Newport are the visitors, while Yeovil - who are a point and a place above the Yorkshire side - are at Morecambe.

Elsewhere, Wycombe are at Hartlepool, Mansfield go to Wimbledon and Leyton Orient host Exeter.

  19. 'Austin is sign of intent'published at 12:38

    Saints sign Austin

Les Reed, Southampton’s executive director of football, had this to say about his club signing Charlie Austin from QPR: “This signing is an indicator of our intent to finish the season strongly and continue the progress we’ve made in the last few years.

“Charlie shares that ambition. He has a fantastic goalscoring pedigree, but remains hungry to improve and develop as a footballer – something that convinced him that Southampton is the ideal next step in his career.

“Having had a taste of Premier League football and his first call-up to the England squad last season, he is determined to establish himself at the highest level of the game."
