    Swansea 0-0 Southampton

Swansea's Jack Cork challenges for the ball and accidentally boots Southampton's Matt Targett in the head. That hurt but Targett doesn't make a big deal of it and is fine to carry on.

Southampton's Ryan Bertrand with a lovely cross from the left but Oriel Romeu can't direct it towards goal. Again, the delivery was lacking nothing but the execution was awry.

They haven't got that close so far this afternoon though...

Swansea left-back Neil Taylor was impressive going forward in the first half but misses an opportunity to swing a cross over, falls and concedes a throw.

Well, after 44 minutes of not very much, it all came to life in the last two minutes of the half. Gylfi Sigurdsson's volley was difficult to control but still a very presentable chance.

At the other end, Shane Long was perfectly set up by Steven Davis' long, curling cross. He could see it all the way and, directed in either corner, his header would have been the opener.

It should have been the opener.

Still, a suggestion of better to come in the second half.

  9. CLOSE!published at 45 mins

    Swansea 0-0 Southampton

Just after Swansea create their best chance, Southampton miss a great opportunity of their own as Shane Long heads straight at Lukasz Fabianski. He was unmarked and didn't even have to jump. Should have scored.

Lovely move from the Swans, a cross from the right is flicked on by Alberto Paloschi right into Gylfi Sigurdsson's path. He has a clear sight of goal but his left-foot volley flies over.

When Leon Britton is shooting at goal, you know it’s a game of few chances.

Swansea’s diminutive midfielder has not scored since May 2011, and his miscued effort from 20 yards could only draw a few sympathetic sighs from the stands.

Poor delivery and it's cleared at the near post. So no.

Corner to Swansea. Their first. Can they do anything?

Southampton, who are playing three at the back with Jose Fonte, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand, are predictably looking secure after keeping five clean sheets in a row. Swansea just cannot penetrate the Saints' penalty area.

Saying that, Ronald Koeman's side are not doing much more offensively. Defences on top.

The first booking of the afternoon goes to Southampton's Oriel Romeu for a late tackle on Leon Britton. Referee Jonathan Moss doesn't hesitate and he gets that one right.

Here comes Swansea's Neil Taylor again, coming forward down the left. He passes inside to Gylfi Sigurdsson, who tries to find Angel Rangel with a curling cross but the sat-nav is faulty and the ball bounces out for a goal-kick.

Our average positions graphic shows that Southampton (right) have been the more attacking team so far. But, in truth, neither side has been overly adventurous. It's been a quiet half-hour.

There has been little to excite either set of supporters in an opening quarter in which Southampton have controlled possession but created little in terms of real scoring opportunities.

Swansea fans do at least have their animated head coach Francesco Guidolin to follow on the touchline; the Italian conforming to national stereotypes as he gesticulates excitedly from his technical area.

Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson must be feeling good after five goals in six games and he fancies a crack here, swinging his left foot at the ball from 20 yards. Sadly for him, it was more suited to a drop-goal attempt in the Six Nations rugby.

    Swansea 0-0 Southampton

Swansea left-back Neil Taylor is looking a threat going forward and makes three attempts to swing a cross over. The third is a peach but neither Andre Ayew nor Alberto Paloschi are able to get on the end of it. They should have been more alert there.
