And seconds later Thomas Muller misses another unmarked chance from inside the box. This time the ball comes down the other wing with Douglas Costa, who squares it and Muller fires wide.

Really uncharacteristic finishing from the World Cup goal legend. We're also not used to seeing him as a substitute.

Christoph Kramer gets a volley wrong for Bayer Leverkusen but it actually goes nowhere and he gets a second shot which isn't much better. Ball breaks for Hakan Calhanoglu but his effort is weak.

And just as I'm about to say they're on top, Thomas Muller should have put Bayern ahead. Kingsley Coman's cross finds the substitute, totally unmarked, 10 marks out and he puts it over. You'd have expected him to net from there.

It's becoming a pretty good game now.

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 60 mins

Here comes Thomas Mulller for Bayern Munich. The third top scorer in this season's Bundesliga (with 14) replaces Arjen Robben.

Bayern Munich break from the corner and Arjen Robben of five years ago probably makes this 1-0. But injuries and age have removed some of his pace. The winger bursts away from the halfway line with several defenders chasing him and they catch up with him and win the ball just as he reaches the box.

Bayer Leverkusen starting to look good now, Wendell's cross finds Hakan Calhanoglu and the playmaker's shot is deflected out for a corner by Joshua Kimmich.

You can see why Javier Hernandez has scored so many goals recently. He takes a touch outside the area and smashes the bouncing ball just wide of the post. It almost hits Thomas Muller, who is warming up just at behind the goal.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 52 mins

Both sides make changes - Bayern bring on Thiago in central midfield for Arturo Vidal, who hasn't been great,

Bayer Leverkusen make a change at right-back as Roberto Hilbert replaces Tin Jedvaj.

Bayern start the second half off very brightly and Kingsley Coman, who is rapid, surges down the left but his cross is too high for Arjen Robben, who attempts to control it with his head.

Bayer Leverkusen kick this second half off. It has to be better than the first half. Surely. Please.

Courtney Brown: Many suggestions that Pep is chasing money, that it is not much of a challenge. Should he have chosen Bolton to prove himself?

Are there many industries in which people wouldn't take the best job they could? Nobody suggests world-class players should move to a smaller/worse team for a challenge.

Not a classic. No injury time.Goalless at the break.

Bayer Leverkusen's Javier Hernandez gets the ball for almost the first time in an attacking position. Karim Bellarabi is in the box waiting for a cross but, well, I'm not even sure what Hernandez tried. It was either a bad cross or an awful shot but it's beyond his team-mate and goes out for a goal-kick.

Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal goes down in agony after Stefan Kiessling falls on his leg as both players went down in a bundle.

    Thiago is warming up.

It all gets a bit heated as Kingsley Coman goes down under limited pressure from Tin Jedvaj. Players clash and the referee has a discussion with several of them but nobody goes into the book.

We've had 16 fouls in the first 34 minutes but no bookings.

  18. Postpublished at 32 mins

Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez, who has scored 19 goals in his last 16 games, has barely had a touch so far.

Bayern almost have a chance as a Leverkusen defender tries to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick - Robert Lewandwoski is more alert and hooks the ball back into the mixer - but it's too far away from Arturo Vidal, who wasn't expecting the ball to stay in play.

Arjen Robben set Robert Lewandwoski down the right and - with Arturo Vidal waiting in the box - Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah did well to poke the ball out for a throw-in.
