People criticising Neville need to understand. This Barcelona side could do this to any side in the world. They are brilliant.

    Barcelona 2-0 Valencia

First caution of the tie and it's the name of Andres Iniesta who goes into the referee's notebook for handball. Valencia's players look like rabbits in headlights. They're startled and have frozen on the Nou Camp stage.

Was Gary Neville right to begin his managerial career in Spain?

Kevin Ticehurst: Valencia are the fourth biggest club in Spain. I honestly thought and still think now it was too big a step for him.

Folaranmi Victor: Too soon. Should have joined in the summer where he would have the pre-season to make signings and build his team.

Patrick Barnes: I think Gary Neville and other ex players would be best to start managing at non league level and gradually progress upwards!

    Barcelona 2-0 Valencia

Valencia just cannot get out of their own half. Barca have had three shots - and scored two goals. The hosts have had 62% possession in the opening 15 minutes.

  9. Suarez on a hat-trickpublished at 14 mins

    Barcelona 2-0 Valencia

Disaster for Gary Neville as Luis Suarez's first time finish from 10 yards following a super move doubles Barca's lead. Sergio Busquets passes to Aleix Vidal, who in turn finds Suarez for his second of the game with a curling effort. This is breathless stuff by Luis Enrique's men.

    Barcelona 1-0 Valencia

Just the start Gary Neville did not want. Luis Suarez races on to a wonderful threaded pass by Neymar and slots lows past Valencia's Australian-born keeper Mathew Ryan. This could be a long night for Valencia.

An early worry for Barcelona. Neymar chases a pass and ends up sliding off the pitch and into the area where a cluster of photographers are gathered at the side of the Valencia goal. The Brazil forward is taking his time getting up.

  18. 'Doubly dangerous'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2016

    Barcelona v Valencia (20:00 GMT)

They might be struggling in the league, but, according to European champions Barcelona, that makes them "doubly dangerous".

An article on their website, external states: "Valencia have not failed to finish in the top half of La Liga since 1988, but they’re down in 12th at the moment. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo was replaced by Gary Neville in December, but with five draws and three defeats, they have yet to register a league win under the Englishman.

"But their cup run is in contrast to their poor league form, and qualification for the final would be the perfect way to get something positive out of a disappointing season. And that makes them doubly dangerous."

  19. Neville wants another special memorypublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2016

    Barcelona v Valencia (20:00 GMT)

Valencia boss Gary Neville says he "cannot wait" to pit his wits against Barca boss Luis Enrique - despite his side's poor league form.

Neville has yet to win a league match since being appointed in December and home fans booed his team after the 1-0 defeat by Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

"We know how difficult that game is going to be but these are the moments you live for as a player and a coach," said Neville.

"I've been back to the Nou Camp since 1999 - that stadium obviously holds special memories. I hope on Wednesday we can have another special memory."

Was Gary Neville right to begin his managerial career in Spain?

Martin Banks: Even if he was right or wrong at least he had the guts to do it. Not enough of our managers consider going abroad.

Harry Boulton: It doesn't surprise me that he took the challenge on. He's brave (foolhardy?) that way. Definitely to be admired.

Stuart Bramley: Should have started in the lower leagues regardless of nation.
