Jurgen Klopp celebrated that penalty save like a goal, uppercutting the air and bawling to the sky yards away from a peeved Ronald Koeman.

You can see why other managers may be less-than-enthusiastic about his "enthusiasm" and "energy" on the touchline.

"You can see Skrtel actually pulling down his shirt, but his is half way up his back so I think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other."

Simon Mignolet plunges to his right to push away Sadio Mane's penalty kick that was at a nice height and nothing-much pace.

Is this just not going to be Southampton's day?

"Southampton have gone three up front with Mane, Pelle and Long. It is nice and positive. How that works against a Liverpool side which has broken so quickly against them remains to be seen."

    Southampton have started well.

Lots of tempo, Sadio Mane getting on the ball plenty and Emre Can picking up a booking at the base of Liverpool's midfield for a mis-timed challenge.

Changes for both sides at the break and they make sense.

Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane are on in place of Jordie Clasie and Dusan Tadic to bring stability and cutting edge to Southampton's midfield.

Martin Skrtel replaces the booked Dejan Lovren who struggled against Shane Long's pace in the first half.

    We are back underway.

"Southampton have changed their shape, they are now tougher to open up but it has compromised their attack. If they had started like this they would be fine but at 2-0 down they need a threat from somewhere."

The stats break down fairly evenly, but there was a period after Philippe Coutinho's first that Southampton went a little AWOL in defence and concentration.

They conceded Daniel Sturridge's second and could have shipped a couple more as well.

    For Dejan Lovren?

    Could be either.

Saints fans rise off their seats as Steven Davis steps over the top of Dusan Tadic's pass, allowing it to run to Graziano Pelle in the box. The big Italian swivels, but not quite slickly enough and he can only send a scruffy shot well wide.

Southampton did seem to be teetering on the brink of 3-0 and out, but they look to have stabilised a bit now, dispensing with the kamikaze high line and starting to grind their way back into the game.

Liverpool think that this is going the way of the Captial One Cup quarter-final fast.

    But hold up.

Joe Allen's snapped shot as a loose ball dropped to him from a corner may have beaten Fraser Forster and found the net, but Mamadou Sakho was a little slow out of the box and is adjudged to have interfered with play.

Fair enough. He had to basically jump over the ball to allow it through to goal.

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool are being given far too much space to counter into by Southampton.

Joe Allen should score after the visitors disappear upfield in a plait of jet streams, but the Welshman sidefoots into Fraser Forster's shins from eight yards out.

Then Daniel Sturridge's shot is tame as the hosts are caught three on three again.

Southampton need to regroup rather than go chasing a goal too soon. Nick one and Liverpool may get edgy. Concede one and they won't be.

"Southampton are massively open to the counter attack.

"It was a great run from Divock Origi but how Daniel Sturridge digs that out when he is almost stood on the ball takes Forster by surprise.

"He digs it out and smashes it. Neither defender gets close enough when they should have gone to the ball. The amount of power he gets from such little back lift makes him such a threat."
