Andros Townsend loves a blockbuster moment and he's tried to break the box office as he comes in from the right and takes a swing 30 yards out.

It's a daisy-cutter straight at Albion keeper Ben Foster. That's Palace's first shot on target - 30 minutes in.

Strong, firm sliding tackle from Jonny Evans on Palace's Joel Ward by the goal-line.

Firm - probably the best word to describe this game.

West Brom's Claudio Yacob annoys Mile Jedinak with a challenge and the Aussie midfielder reacts by clattering the Albion man.

The words Andros Townsend and frustrating can often be found in close quarters of each other.

The Palace winger drives in off the right flank to the edge of the area and back heels the ball to nobody.

Down the other end, Connor Wickham has an equally uninspiring moment as he takes in Mile Jedinak's low cross just inside the area and swings a left boot at it - but the contact is poor and it bumbles wide.

(I copied and pasted the last bit of that sentence from the previous entry).

Not much of a come-and-get-me moment from Saido Berahino here.

His West Brom strike partner makes himself a pain in the Palace defence's backside by battling away on the right of the area and he dinks a cross to the head of Berahino, who is on the penalty spot.

The contact is poor and it bumbles wide.

The playing surface at Selhurst Park is lush and green and lovely.

It's a shame none of the men standing on it are rolling the ball across it with the same value of aesthetic.

To be fair, Andros Townsend and Jason Puncheon almost just combined with a nice one-two for Palace. Emphasis on almost.

Speaking of Craig Gardner being no-nonsense. He's just hacked down Andros Townsend to give Palace a free-kick in a decent position.

It's Townsend to swing it in left-footed, deep on the right, and Connor Wickham glances a header wide.

I love to see that, Craig Gardner no messing about just put a good ball into the box and he invited the strikers to get on the end of it and Salomon Rondon almost scored.

Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha is looking enthusiastic, if not effective.

He's wriggled his way down the left and scuffed in a low cross, which Ben Foster had his name on all day long.

Oh great save by Wayne Hennesey in the Palace goal as he gets down low to his left to keep out a Salomon Rondon header from Craig Gardner's sweet cross.

The referee is having a word with West Brom defender Gareth McAuley and Palace striker Connor Wickham.

The experienced centre-back performed some expert dark artistry by blocking off the forward as they chased a long ball - no free-kick given.

I'm a big fan of Matt Phillips. I watched a lot of him in his Wycombe days and he definitely has the ability to be a Premier League mainstay. Hopefully West Brom is the place to do it.

Matt Phillips makes a nuisance of himself down the right for West Brom and carves out a low cross for Salomon Rondon, who wins a corner.

Rondon is close to connecting with the set-piece, but it's through a crowd of players.

Crystal Palace finished 15th last season. West Brom finished 14th. Aside from relegated Aston Villa, they were the two lowest scorers last term.

    Enjoy this one, kids.

And a bit of a lashing from Jonas Olsson to bring down Palace's Connor Wickham for the first free-kick of the afternoon.

While Palace's potential exit-man Yannick Bolasie is on the bench, West Brom's perennial want-away striker Saido Berahino starts.

No nonsense stuff from Tony Pulis, obviously.

One of the bargains of the season?

Age: 31 Cost: £1.5m (reported) Position: Goalkeeper

Career so far: Won the French title with Marseille in 2010 and has been named Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year four times, including each of the past two seasons.

What type of player is he? An excellent goalkeeper as well as a leader of men. A great shot stopper, who is confident at dealing with crosses. Has saved three Ligue 1 penalties in the past three seasons.

Will he cut it in the Premier League? Almost certainly, if he is Palace's number one ahead of Wayne Hennessey.

What has been said about him? "He'd be France's number one if it wasn't for Hugo Lloris. You just have to look at his record to see he's a top keeper - he brings experience into that position as well," said Palace assistant boss Keith Millen.
