    Teams that win over 90 minutes are awarded three points.

    If a game is drawn at the end of regulation time, a penalty shoot-out ensues. The winner of the shoot-out gets two points, the loser taking one.

    There will be five rounds of group fixtures and, at the end of that process, the eight group winners and four best runners-up will progress to the second round of the tournament, which then becomes a straight knockout event.

    Aberdeen, Celtic, Hearts and Hibernian - Scotland's representatives in Europe - join the tournament at the second-round stage.
