From a neutral's point of view, that game was a genuinely enthralling spectacle. 

Birmingham midfielder David Davis cancelled out Gary Gardner's earlier excellent header to earn his side a share of the spoils, and both sets of fans will now go into work on Monday and debate who should have won.

"We've had most of the ball, most of the pressure. I think it's unfair on us. I'm absolutely so proud of the players in a local derby to play with that intensity in the whole game. 

"I think if any neutral was watching they'd say Birmingham looked like they wanted to win more."

Aston Villa goalscorer Gary Gardner tells Sky Sports: "It's a massive game for all of us. Both teams worked their socks off and the result showed that.

"We've been working hard all week to get a result and we've done that. Steve Bruce has made a massive impact."

With the boos still ringing out as the teams leave the field, Villa fans start singing that Blues boss Gary Rowett "is one of our own".

He is rumoured to be a boyhood Villan and does nothing to scotch rumours by smiling and acknowledging the Villa fans' chanting.

So where does that leave both teams in the Championship table?

Birmingham are seventh and outside the play-off places on goal difference, while Villa are 15th.

"It means a lot because I've got my family and friends here, so it was nice to get the equaliser.

"You can see how much it means to both teams."

It's been a good derby but Birmingham will be disappointed that they haven't got all three points. They should have won the game - they had enough chances.

I've been disappointed with Aston Villa in an attacking sense but it's another good point for Steve Bruce.

We've got five minutes of added time and Birmingham full-back Rhoys Wiggins' deflected effort squeezes just past the post.

However, he receives a blow for his troubles and is down for treatment.

End-to-end stuff at St Andrew's as Jacques Maghoma loses the ball on the edge of the Villa box, before the visitors go up the other end, only for Gary Gardner to pass up a shooting opportunity and instead losing the ball.

Still lots of noise being made.

Rudy Gestede scored in Villa's League Cup win over Birmingham last season and Steve Bruce is hoping for another winner today, as he comes off the bench in place of midfielder Ashley Westwood.

Birmingham go close again, this time through both Michael Morrison and Ryan Shotton.

A corner is swung in towards Morrison, whose header is cleared as far as Shotton and from five yards out the defender can only scoop the ball over the bar.
