And it is all over. Crystal Palace get a much, much needed victory in a pretty uninspiring game at Selhurst Park.

They were gifted an early lead when Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster sliced a clearance and Christian Benteke tapped in.

James Tomkins added a second from close range shortly after and Southampton conceded a third late on with Benteke converting from Jason Puncheon's pull-back.

We are into injury-time. Palace heading towards their first win in eight games after a run that included six successive defeats.

Palace needed this, big-time. They needed a creditable home performance and a clean sheet. Going forward they've looked much better today.

Many people speculated that if he'd lost this game today Alan Pardew would be out of a job. It doesn't look like it now.

    Christian Benteke

And that is the game. From the corner, Southampton fail to clear after Jason Puncheon's cross.

James McArthur's shot rebounds kindly to Puncheon, who pulls the ball back from the deadball line and Christian Benteke, unmarked in the middle of the goal, gets his second tap-in of the afternoon.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is shown giving a thumbs-up symbol to Palace chairman Steve Parish, who responds in a similar fashion. This will certainly ease the pressure on the Eagles boss.

Bakary Sako, who has just come on for Andros Townsend, gets to the byline in a rare Palace attack after a sustained spell of Southampton pressure.

Sako's cross is deflected behind. Corner to the hosts.

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

A bright spell for Southampton as they win their ninth corner of the game. Late pressure from the visitors.

But the corner comes to nothing. Palace defending deep and in numbers. Southampton are being frustrated at the moment.

  7. HITS THE WOODWORK - Southamptonpublished at 80 mins

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

From the corner it is all happening. Southampton's Virgil van Dijk gets his head to the ball, but despite not looking like he knew where the header was going, watches as the ball loops up on to the top of the crossbar.

Palace then fail to clear and it falls to Jose Fonte, six yards out, in the middle of the goal, but he sends a volley off target. Glorious chance.

An instant chance for substitute Shane Long. He meets a Cedric Soares cross and Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has to shovel the ball wide for a corner.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

Double swap for the Saints. Shane Long and Sam McQueen on, the ineffective Charlie Austin as well as Sofiane Boufal the men going off.

If Andros Townsend wants to impress Gareth Southgate then he has to do a lot better than that.

Townsend cuts in from the left wing, but shoots well, well over with his right foot from 25 yards.

We have not been blessed with great skill today but a couple of errors from Southampton were punished and that remains the difference.

A needless booking for Crystal Palace goalscorer Christian Benteke. Virgil van Dijk runs past him, Benteke pulls him back and is booked.

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

He has not been on for long but Josh Sims comes close for the visitors. He is released by Sofiane Boufal, Sims drags the ball on to his left foot and fires at goal, but it goes narrowly over the bar.

A sea of red and blue shirts in their own area deny Southampton. James Ward-Prowse has a shot blocked after a scramble, the visitors unsuccessfully appeal for a handball, the ball drops to Cedric Soares and he lashes the ball over the top.

Palace conceded 17 goals in their last five games but have looked solid in the back today, with Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and James Tomkins deserving some praise.

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

Teenager Josh Sims, 19, who impressed on his debut in the Saints' 1-0 win over Everton last weekend, is on as Claude Puel looks to change things around. Pierre Hojbjerg is the man who jogs off.

Charlie Austin is booked for a foul on Joe Ledley. The Saints striker has got six goals in the Premier League this season, but has been quiet today.

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

Risky defending from Crystal Palace's Scott Dann as he looks to have given Jose Fonte a shove in his own penalty area as the Saints centre-half rose for a header.

Referee Neil Swarbrick was not interested and it looked like Dann has got away with that a bit.

  18. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Crystal Palace 2-0 Southampton

An early chance for Crystal Palace in the beginning of the second half. A step-over from Andros Townsend fools the away defence and he sets up Joel Ward, who could only send a tame effort straight at Fraser Forster.

At the other end, Sofiane Boufal goes for a spectacular volley and instantly wishes he hadn't as the ball goes high, wide, and not very handsome.
