    Stoke 1-0 Burnley

Jonathan Walters may be greying at the temples, but there is no dampening his enthusiasm. The lively Republic of Ireland forward uses his body to good effect to hold the ball up and play in Mame Biram Diouf, only for the Senegal international to fail to get his shooting chance away.

    Jonathan Walters

A well-worked goal for Stoke from a throw-in. Mame Biram Diouf plays a neat one-two with Xherdan Shaqiri which allows the former to deliver a teasing ball into the box.

Diouf's cross is met by Jonathan Walters, who expertly guides a controlled volley past Burnley goalkeeper from just inside the six-yard box.

Mark Hughes raises his hand in the air in delight.

    Stoke 0-0 Burnley

Stoke, operating with an en vogue three-at-the-back system, have settled into their rhythm now. Mame Biram Diouf cleanly strikes an effort from long range which flashes over the crossbar.

Paul Robinson didn't look too worried in the Burnley goal. That's experience for you.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 11 min

    Stoke 0-0 Burnley

The long-haired Jeff Hendrick is the first name in referee Mark Clattenburg book after he is late into a tackle on to Charlie Adam. Clarets boss Sean Dyche vents his fury at the decision from the sidelines.

Stoke with the first clear-cut chance. A corner is swung into the box and Bruno Martins Indi climbs highest to nod the ball goalwards. His header bounces back off the post and Giannelli Imbula screws the follow-up from the edge of the box wide of goal.

Mark Hughes has finally got his Stoke team operating in the way he wants. They are big, strong and resolute.

It's been a change of philosophy for Stoke under Hughes, and it's taken time for that to take effect. But I now think Stoke will be fine competing in this Premier League.

    Stoke 0-0 Burnley

Burnley have a real intensity and purpose about their play in these early stages. The instructions from Sean Dyche appear to get the ball up to the front men quickly, and hit on the counter, have ruffled the Stoke defence a little.

    Stoke 0-0 Burnley

Ashley Barnes breaks clear after being sent through by Andre Gray. It's a tame finish which Lee Grant gathers comfortably, and once again the assistant referee had his flag raised. Moments later the ball sits up for Gray on the edge of the box, only for the Burnley man to balloon it into the stands. Hoots of delight from the Potters fans.

Burnley struggle away from home to score goals, or even to get balls into dangerous areas. I fear they'll really find it tough this afternoon.

An early free-kick from Scott Arfield deflects off the Stoke wall for a corner. Michael Keane lifts an effort over the crossbar but the linesman had already raised his flag. Positive start by the visitors here.

It might sound like all doom and gloom for Burnley in the Potteries today. But wind the clock back two years and they were in a similar situation.

The Clarets won 2-1 on their last Premier League visit to Stoke in November 2014. It was their first away victory that season, ending a five-match winless run. Danny Ings scored twice for Burnley that day.

Burnley have also gone three league games without defeat against the Potters. Maybe this isn't a straightforward home banker after all.

  14. 'A strange conundrum'published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

Burnley boss Sean Dyche believes teams in the Premier League have placed more of an emphasis on being stronger in front of their own fans, which partially explains his side's away struggles.

Dyche said: "It's been a strange conundrum, I've never had it as obviously. So it's hard for me to judge whether it's the fact it's the Premier League and everyone talks about home form in the Premier League, needing to be strong no matter who you are, so there's some very strong home teams.

"Then it has to be balanced out after by how are we performing, and I don't think we've performed to the levels we know we can."

Stoke manager Mark Hughes rewards the players who earned him a 1-0 at Watford last time out by naming an unchanged side.

That means no place for influential midfielder Joe Allen, back from suspension and named among Stoke's substitutes.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche makes four changes from the side which lost 2-1 to Manchester City at Turf Moor. Out go Matt Lowton, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Steven Defour and Sam Vokes with Jon Flanagan, Scott Arfield, Andre Gray and Ashley Barnes the men to replace them.

Clarets goalkeeper Tom Heaton is still not fit which means veteran Paul Robinson continues between the sticks.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes will not be in a charitable mood with valuable Premier League points on the line. Although he at least is able to empathise with Sean Dyche's struggles on the road.

Hughes said: "Burnley seem to have more of a problem away from home, which is understandable. It is difficult to pick up away points, and we have experienced that.

"It was initially a struggle for us when I first came here but we are more adept at going on the road and picking up good results now. It can be difficult when you fall behind away from home, and maybe that has been the issue for them."

It's fair to say the Burnley fans who have been clocking up the miles by road and rail this season haven't had much to cheer about.

There was a hard-earned point against Manchester United courtesy of a goalless draw at Old Trafford in October. But that's all they have to show for their efforts away from Turf Moor.

You could forgive Sean Dyche for asking the kitman to pack a rabbit's foot, four leaf clover and a horseshoe along with the shirts, shorts and socks. Is their luck about to change against Stoke in the Potteries?
