Hal Rosbon-Kanu shows us the biggest smile of the day as he jumps from the bench and is met by embraces on the sound of the whistle. What a goal, worthy of winning any game.

That's a big win for West Brom. Tony Pulis made just one change despite back-to-back defeats over Christmas and that key tweak - Robson-Kanu in for Salomon Rondon - paid off big time.

Jonny Evans is like a dodgem at the fairground, smashing into tackles to win the ball and ensure West Brom get over the line. Less than a minute to go.

The home side pump balls into the box but Ben Foster is cool and calm to collect, allowing West Brom to break.

Matt Phillips leads the counter, it's three against one.... what a waste. His pass is behind Salomon Rondon.

Salomon Rondon has too much pace for Virgil van Dijk and gets the wrong side. It results in the defender wrestling Rondon down and there is absolutely zero doubt. A second yellow, off you go son.

Shane Long races to collect a ball which has gone out of play and headbutts it in anger when he realises the throw-in is not a Southampton one. West Brom are running the clock down nicely. 

Southampton have the ball deep in their own half but they are faced with a glut of away shirts, all nicely behind the ball and organised. Music to the ears of Tony Pulis.

Ben Foster takes a deep breath as the relief runs through his body. The West Brom keeper slams a clearance straight at Oriel Romeu and the ricochet runs well wide but could have gone absolutely anywhere. Tony Pulis's heart jumped out of his mouth there.

James Ward-Prowse swings in a corner, his first action... not bad... great header away from Jonny Evans.

James Ward-Prowse and Josh Sims come on for Claude Puel's side. Dusan Tadic exits, as does Cuco Martina.

James McClean is now on the right wing, Chris Brunt has slotted in at left back. It almost pays off quickly as McClean breaks into space but his pull-back is a fraction off target with Salomon Rondon waiting. That could have been curtains.

The work ethic in this West Brom side is visible. They chase runners, sprint to shut down space and stay compact consistently. Dusan Tadic is forced to try his luck from range. That's desperate and well wide.

The man who could make the headlines - Hal Robson-Kanu - departs for Salomon Rondon.

Southampton are pushing men forward willingly but again they are creating nothing of meaning. They have not opened West Brom up all day long, with crosses their best offering. In comes a corner, headed clear.

Hal Robson-Kanu continues to work admirably for the away side - he seizes on a loose pass deep in the Southampton half and West Brom can keep the ball briefly and get some respite.

James Morrison has slipped into Nacer Chadli's role as the man charged with playing nearest Hal Robson-Kanu but he's right back in the heart of the defensive unit when the Baggies do not have the ball.

A possible weakness could be James McClean, who is playing as a traditional left-back since replacing Allan Nyom - perhaps not his forte.

As the hour ticks over we can see Southampton are still dominant in possession but are not dominant in terms of territory.

West Brom have been incredibly efficient here, giving away little but hurting their hosts when chances have come.

West Brom should be two up. James Morrison - on a few moments ago to replace Nacer Chadli - has a free header six yards out from Matt Phillips' cross. He should do better but the power is lacking and Fraser Forster can palm it around the post. A real chance. Tony Pulis will be fuming if they don't win after such a chance is wasted.

Even the Southampton Twitter account went with "stunning". That's how good it was.

For all the plaudits, Hal Robson-Kanu is perhaps a lucky boy. He has just lashed out after being tackled in midfield, sending an arm towards an opponent in a slappy fashion. That could have been serious trouble but it's only a yellow.

Former WBA striker Tony Brown on BBC WM: "What a strike! Absolutely brilliant from Hal Robson-Kanu - the ball's come out to him and he's drilled it into the top corner. Fantastic technique from him. No chance at all for Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal."
