Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal told Sky Sports: "During the week before the game, we're Sheff Wed, We have principles, we're not an easy team to break down.

"We can draw, lose or win but we will fight, we prepared well, we knew exactly what we must do.

"This is a sign we create clear chances to score, for my players it was fantastic in the plan we created. they deserved the three points and our fans were fantastic."

    FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Well, Newcastle are back at home on Friday, 30 December to Nottingham Forest... plenty of spice about that one after the previous meeting.

Not too much of a turn around either...

Sheffield Wednesday go to Preston North End on New Year's Eve.

  5. Did Newcastle miss Shelvey?published at 21:52 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

There was not a lot of incisive play from Newcastle tonight, and the obvious solution might have been the absent Jonjo Shelvey - out for five games through suspension.

However John Anderson, former Newcastle defender and BBC Newcastle pundit, says that's an excuse.

"He's just one player. Whether he'd have made the difference for the other 10 players, I don't think so."

  6. Five wins in six for the Owlspublished at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

It will be no consolation to Newcastle fans, or those with bets hinging on this game, but Sheffield Wednesday are no dummies.

Five wins in the last six now have put them in the play-off mix, and they will end 2016 in the top six and on course to repeat their efforts for promotion to the Premier League.

Well organised, hard to break down and good on the break, it's a good recipe for success.

    Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Thoroughly professional display by Sheffield Wednesday, coming to Newcastle United - the league leaders - and coming away with three points.

Glenn Loovens won the match with his header in the second-half, and the deficit might have been greater had Karl Darlow not made a string of saves.

Newcastle failed to truly create against the Owls, and Dwight Gayle's post-rattling first-half shot was the best they managed.

Plenty for Rafael Benitez to ponder, for Carlos Carvalhal, it's a tactical masterclass.

Ciaran Clark is tempted into the foul by Wednesday and that will probably be that.

He's an awkward looking customer isn't he? Atdhe Nuhiu. Just won a throw down in Newcastle's full-back position.

    Last minute of added time...

Newcastle pepper the Wednesday box but the ball is cleared and the visitors break. Just ticking down the clock, well away from their goalmouth.

It's not pretty but if you're an Owls fan, who cares.

They're wasting some time - as Ross Wallace is replaced by Atdhe Nuhiu.

Steven Fletcher is receiving treatment from physios, but that doesn't stop him being met by a chorus of boos,

He gingerly makes his way off the pitch and we will resume. Ball is with Keiren Westwood, and he sends it long downfield.

Ciaran Molloy has been in touch on #bbcefl and I think he's probably speaking for a few people when he says this current scoreline is spoiling his bet.

Newcastle are at least trying to get something out of this game and indirectly help out Ciaran.

Christian Atsu has Keiren Westwood scrambling. Tip over. Corner. Comes to nothing.
