Tottenham had to work for it, it's far from the polished performance that Pochettino would have wanted from his side.

But it's three points, and if you would have offered them that before the match, they would have taken it.

They can't think about Chelsea, they just need to keep going, winning matches and racking up the points.

The final free-kick is lifted into the area but Tottenham stand tall.

That wasn't pretty, it wasn't exactly the feast of quality we know they can serve up but still, sometimes you just have to get it done.

A long ball, a flick on and Alvaro Negredo clips the ball into the path of Marten de Roon. It drops over his shoulder to hit first time and he pulls it wide.

Despite the fact they lead and will be second in the table, there has been too much of this from Tottenham today. Too many poor decisions in the final third.

What's this, Middlesbrough having a go. Aitor Karanka looking hopeful as his side force a corner but the ball is cleared and put back in with no quality at all by Adam Clayton.

"That's ridiculous", says a colleague as Alvaro Negredo attempts an overhead kick from around 16 yards out. It's a cracking effort to be fair and flashes across goal. I'd say Hugo Lloris had it covered but still, kudos to you Mr Negredo.

Harry Kane spots Dele Alli well placed in the box and his high ball is plucked from the air brilliantly by the young midfielder. Alli tries to square for Kane in the six-yard box but a superb last-ditch tackle denies him. The keeper is on the deck, Christian Eriksen has the loose ball and can fire... deflected wide.

Middlesbrough have dug in and given a decent account of themselves, but in a sense they've been disappointing because this was an opportunity to come here and play for a result without pressure. Even now they could be committing men forwards - they may as well lose 3-1 rather than 1-0.

Going into this final 10 minutes or so it's hard to see a Middlesbrough goal. They are trying but in truth it's all a little blunt. Adam Clayton plays a diagonal into the box, headed clear.

Patrick Bamford on, Adama Traore off. If I'm a Tottenham player I'm thrilled to see the pace of Traore disappear.

Son Heung-Min off, Moussa Sissoko on. Son was very good. Our statisticians have him down as having played four key passes. And, of course, he won the penalty.

Again Tottenham are sloppy with a glorious chance on offer. A three versus two scenario, Middlesbrough's two central defenders backtracking, yet Harry Kane forces Dele Alli wide and his cut-back is diverted out of play by Christian Eriksen.

Harry Kane is played into the left channel with time and space to pick out a cross but he hits the first man. If Mauricio Pochettino is to be annoyed by anything today it may well be Tottenham's final ball.

I've been so impressed with Dele Alli today, his movement is brilliant, he plays with the brain of a 35-year-old. Combined with his youth and enthusiasm, it makes him such a dangerous weapon for Tottenham.

Cristhian Stuani and debutant Adlene Guediora have been thrown on by Aitor Karanka but they are having little impact. Spurs being very professional in keeping the ball patiently and ensuring there can be no Boro backlash.

Marten de Roon tries to leap for a cross in the box but gets little on it.
