Form-wise, Sunderland appear in better shape than a Southampton side who have lost six of their past seven league games and are not out of the relegation picture themselves.

    Prediction: 1-0

What do the stats tell us about this one? Not a lot I fear.

Sunderland are without a win in four against Southampton and have won just once in the last eight meetings between the teams.

But, David Moyes has only lost once in his previous 11 Premier League games against the Saints.

As we have said, Southampton are on a poor run. They have failed to score more than one goal in 20 of their 24 games this season while Sunderland have only scored 24 all season.

That would suggest we're in for a low scoring affair but there has not been a goalless draw between these two since March 1978 - a run stretching back 37 games.

    Stats, ey?

  4. Saints 'angry' at poor runpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2017

Southampton may have reached the EFL Cup final but in the Premier League a win over Leicester has been the sole bright moment in recent weeks.

Claude Puel's side have lost their other six league matches since Christmas Day and the Frenchman says his squad are "angry" with the results.

"We have to correct this and give a good answer," he said. "We cannot accept this position and the last results. It's not us."

It is a long journey up to Sunderland from the south coast - the Saints' longest trip of the season in fact. That coach full of angry footballers can't have been much fun.

Last week's extraordinary and hugely unexpected 4-0 victory away at Crystal Palace breathed much-needed life into Sunderland's survival battle.

Now David Moyes' side could be catching Southampton at just the right time to inject further momentum.

Saints have lost six of their past seven Premier League games and it appears their focus is on picking up silverware in a fortnight at Wembley rather than picking up points.

Now enduring their fifth successive relegation scrap, Sunderland supporters recognise a golden opportunity when they see it.

They're also well accustomed to seeing their stars in stripes fluff their lines, so know better than to expect a comfortable afternoon at the Stadium of Light.

    Premier League

A win for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light today could see the Premier League's bottom club climb as high as 15th, if results go their way.

That would leave the Black Cats just five points behind Claude Puel's Southampton who have not picked up a point on the road in 2017.

The home side come into this one buoyed by their stunning 4-0 win at Crystal Palace last week but don't count your chickens Sunderland fans, your team has only won back-to-back games once this season.

But with six defeats for Southampton in their past seven Premier League games, it is also an important game for their manager.
