  2. 'Perfect chance for Boro?'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Match of the Day commentator

After Wednesday's  defeat at fellow strugglers Hull City,  I thought this was a game Middlesbrough had to win.

After checking their remaining fixtures, I'm now convinced victory is absolutely vital.

You see, Boro still have to play Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Seven points adrift of safety and without a win since Christmas, things are looking desperate, but a home game against Burnley might just provide a much-needed chink of light.

The Clarets' away record is easily the worst in the Premier League.

On paper, it's the perfect chance for Boro to inject fresh hope into their survival bid. Fail to grab it and the fat lady can start warming up in the wings.

Burnley make two changes to the side that started in the 1-0 win over Stoke.

Midfielder Steven Defour is out due to injury and is replaced by Robbie Brady who returns to the starting XI for the first time since early March.

Forward Ashley Barnes replaces Sam Vokes in attack.

Cheer up! At least you're not Sunderland fans...

Boro goalscoring legend Bernie Slaven tried to keep a brave face on BBC's Football Focus earlier when talking about his old side's hopes.

The Scot churned out goals as often as smoke billows out of those big chimneys up in Teesside, but alas this season the class of 2016-17 have barely created a spark in front of the sticks.

They are the lowest scorers in the Premier League and seven points shy of safety.

Goals win prizes - in their case it's another £90m next season.

And as for Burnley. They are about three levels above the drop zone (seven points clear in normal parlance).

The win against Stoke the other night would have come as a relief. They'll comfortably crawl over the safety line. I'll rephrase, "they should".
