Another sweeping Barca attack, started by Sergio Busquets, ends in more frustration as Neymar fires horribly wide. That's it. The first half is over. Barca have failed to register a shot on target against a well organised Espanyol side.

Lionel Messi is at the heart of a surging Barca move but it breaks down on the edge of Espanyol's penalty area when Ivan Rakitic loses possession.

Sergi Roberto sends a header into the side netting. When was the last time Barca went 45 minutes without an effort on target in La Liga? There's five minutes of the first half remaining and Espanyol's keeper has not had a save to make.

There's a long way to go in this but it's worth a reminder that if this ends goalless then Real Madrid, who have one game in hand, will be two points clear at the top of La Liga with just three games left for Barca.

Luis Suarez skips away from David Lopez and cuts in from the wing. Neymar and Lionel Messi race into the penalty area but Suarez's pass is so poor and easily cut out. It's the story of Barca's night.

Hesitation from Gerard Pique almost hands Felipe Caicedo an opening from close range. That's raised the noise levels inside the ground.

Barca's possession figure continues to creep up. All the action is taking place in Espanyol's half but just two shots from the visitors in the opening half an hour - and none on target.

He's La Liga's top scorer this season but Lionel Messi has yet to have a shot on target in this game.

It's niggly, it's high tempo but it's still goalless. Espanyol are being penned inside their own half but will be pretty pleased with how they have started.

A Barca attack is brought to a halt by the referee's whistle after Luis Suarez barges into Diego Reyes on the edge of Espanyol's penalty area. Suarez shrugs his shoulders and puts on his best innocent face.

Still no shots on target from Barca. We've seen very little in terms of attacking threat from Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. There's an awful long way to go yet though.

First yellow of the game as Gerard Moreno goes in too hard on Ivan Rakitic. It can't have hurt that much as moments later Rakitic is back on his feet and firing narrowly over Espanyol's bar.

Barca have enjoyed lots of possession in the opening 15 minutes but have done little in way of troubling Espanyol's defence.

It's frantic, helter-skelter stuff - a typical start to a derby. Suddenly Neymar has sight of goal and lets fly from inside the penalty area. It cannons off a blue and white shirt. 

Luis Suarez is without a goal in his last three games and he was rested in midweek. He's not had a sniff so far.

Huge chance for Espanyol. 

Barca's defence is carved open as former Manchester City forward Felipe Caicedo plays in Jose Manuel Jurado but the ex-Watford midfielder screws his shot horribly with just the keeper to beat.

Espanyol won't get a better chance.
