  4. Coutinho to Barca?published at 14:53 British Summer Time 21 May 2017

    Liverpool v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam and former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen were on 5 live this week.

Here's what they had to say on Philippe Coutinho's future at Liverpool and the current state of play at the club.

Adam: "I can see Coutinho at Barcelona. Playing against him he’s a wonderful tactician. He’s going to cost quite a lot.

"I speak to Glen Johnson a lot and he says that he is the best player by a country mile."

Meulensteen: "If Liverpool can get into the top four and they keep Coutinho and Klopp can add a couple of players then they will go from strength to strength."

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has been in bullish mood in the wake of his team's relegation to the Championship.

"It's heartbreaking really. The season's been really tough. You make decisions and your mistakes are a retrospective view of the decisions you make," he told BBC Tees this week.

"We will smash the league next year. We want to go back up as champions."

    Liverpool v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

    Guy Mowbray
    Match of the Day commentator

    It's all very simple.

Liverpool need to win for a top-four place. They're at home to a side that has already been relegated. Liverpool win.

Now put yourself in the position of a Reds fan if it's still 0-0 after 75 minutes, with Arsenal in front against Everton. Heart going faster?

Take it a notch higher and see yourself as a Liverpool player in that scenario. Tension rising, snatching at chances, with Boro summoning up the spirit of their last visit to Anfield in the League Cup two seasons ago.

All very dramatic - and that's how we'd like it on Match Of The Day!

In reality, it's likely to come back to two words from earlier.

    Liverpool win.

From those last three home games, Liverpool have taken only two points.

They need all three today to be sure of making a return to the Champions League for the first time since their underwhelming group-stage exit under Brendan Rodgers in 2014-15.

For the Reds, it all boils down to Middlesborough at home.

Here is the home coach arriving to a soundtrack of jangling home nerves...

  10. Home, but not drypublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 21 May 2017

    Liverpool v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

Jurgen Klopp could hardly have hand-picked a better run-in at Anfield.

But, just as they have all season, Liverpool have been perversely predictable, acing the trickiest tests, fluffing the apparent gimmes.

    Liverpool v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

Roberto Firmino returns for Liverpool after missing the 4-0 win over West Ham. It is Divock Origi, rather than Daniel Sturridge, who makes way though. Philippe Coutinho may reprise the deeper role he was deployed in at London Stadium.

    Liverpool XI

Rudi Gestede starts up front for Middlesbrough as Alvaro Negredo drops to the bench after the 2-1 defeat at home by Southampton. Grant Leadbitter is also in for Marten de Roon in midfield. Adam Traore fails to even make the matchday squad.
