  • Southampton have six points fewer than at this stage last term

  1. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 61 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

    Change for Saints.

Manolo Gabbiadini is off for Charlie Austin, who has scored in two of Southampton's past three games.

  2. Struggling Southamptonpublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Southampton can't get out of their own half at the moment, that tactical switch has done nothing for them, because whenever they get the ball no one's there to collect it and do something with it. They haven't made an effort to go and get an equaliser yet.

  3. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi on the bench for Chelsea, who don't really have a focal point to their attacks.

Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian are doing the pretty stuff, but once Antonio Conte's side work it wide there's no one in the box the pose a threat.

  4. Postpublished at 57 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Southampton haven't really made it into the Chelsea half since the break, although they are keeping possession nicely at the minute.

    Little to shout about...

  5. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

A nervy moment for Maya Yoshida there. He's hurried and hassled by Eden Hazard before the Southampton defender falls on the ball.

Wesley Hoedt then hammers a clearance high into the west London sky and Southampton make a real mess of trying to get rid of the ball.

  6. Tactical switch for Southamptonpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

    Pat Nevin

Southampton have actually made a change to their team - Nathan Redmond has gone up top with Manolo Gabbiadini - so they're playing more of a 5-3-2 now, which is a little bit more positive.

Willian - from the sublime to the ridiculous.

The tricky Brazilian skips away from about three Southampton defenders with lightning-quick feet, before hammering a left-footed shot into whatever comes after Row Z.

  8. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

It's been a bit scrappy at the start of the second half.

Chelsea can't really keep hold of the ball, neither can Southampton.

Nathan Redmond does pluck a long ball out of the air with a wonderful, deft touch though - wonder what Pep Guardiola would have to say about that?

  9. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Eden Hazard is down on the team-sheet as leading the line for Chelsea, but the forward is dropping right off the Southampton defence into pockets of space.

Every time he gets the ball he's looking to run and probe for passes, he might have a bit more joy this half with Southampton having to come out and attack.

  10. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Southampton get the second half under way.

Can Saints get back into this one?

  11. Forster to blame?published at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Again - it's a good free-kick - but you've got to ask questions of the goalkeeper. That wall was not correctly lined up, they need another player on the end of it. Did the last man move? Or did Forster not line it up properly.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

That's the last kick of the first half.

All Southampton's good work is undone, but Chelsea deservedly lead.

  13. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 1-0 Southamptonpublished at 45+2 mins

    Marcos Alonso (45+2 mins)

    How about that!

Just as we thought this half was petering out, Marcos Alonso whips a free kick from 30+ yards into the bottom corner with his left foot.

It was low, around the wall, and caught Fraser Forster napping in the Southampton goal. No less than Chelsea deserve, mind.

  14. Postpublished at 45+1 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

Thibaut Courtois probably didn't fancy that one. He's thrown the ball on his own line with Southampton forwards lurking, and boots it straight back out of play...

  15. Southampton sitting dangerously deeppublished at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Chelsea winger at Stamford Bridge for 5 live Sport

That's three occasions now that Chelsea have had three shots that have had deflections. Southampton are sitting so deep, it means that if Chelsea can keep peppering the goal, eventually one of those deflections is going to find the net. Southampton need to push up.

  16. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

That's eight shots for Chelsea in this first half, only three on target. Time for Alvaro Morata?

  17. CLOSE!published at 43 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

Might have to disagree with Pat on this occasion, I think it's been a decent first half...

Pedro, despite never seemingly having the ball under control, manages to wrestle his way into the Southampton area from the right and, after Mario Lemina's weak attempt at a tackle, strikes the near post with a low, right-footed effort.

  18. Dull at Stamford Bridgepublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

To be honest it hasn't been great, this game. We haven't had to raise our voices at all, it's a dull atmosphere at Stamford Bridge today, and if either manager wants to get three points they need to change something.

  19. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

Another good chance for Chelsea, another bit of last-ditch defending for Southampton.

Victor Moses gallops down the right, flings a cross in and Willian has time to chest it down and lay it off to the oncoming Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The powerful midfielder connects with his effort well, but it's deflected wide for a corner off a red and white defender.
