Today is the 80th anniversary of the printing of the Hobbit.

And with one giant leap of logic the Wolfsburg social media team have decided that they are setting forth from their Shire to vanquish a great evil.

  3. Schmidt takes chargepublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

Wolfsburg have got the right man at the helm for a ram-raid of the Allianz Arena.

Martin Schmidt is the last coach to take points from a trip to Bayern Munich when his Mainz side drew 2-2 in April.

That result was not enough to keep him in a job though. Schmidt was sacked at the end of the season after two wins in their final 12 matches of the campaign saw them avoid a relegation/promotion play-off only on goal difference.

Reportedly a childhood friend of Fifa grand fromage Gianni Infantino, the 50-year-old earned a draw in his first match in charge against Werder Bremen on Tuesday after Andries Jonker was fired.

On-loan Liverpool striker Divock Origi scored his first goal for Wolfsburg in their 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen on Tuesday.

The Belgian is in line for his fourth start of the season following Mario Gomez's injury and feels he is more than capable of leading the line in the German's absence:

"I see it as something positive if I need to take on a lot of responsibility. In times like that, I don't feel under pressure and just try to focus on my game."

Mario Gomez suffered ligament damage earlier in the season after his leg gave way in the draw against Hannover.

The 32-year-old striker scored 75 goals during a four-year stint with Bayern, cementing himself as a fan favourite in the process.

It is unclear when he will return to action for Wolfsburg but they will miss the man who scored 16 goals in a difficult 2016-17 season which nearly ended in relegation.

By the way, the doors are open on Munich's Oktoberfest.

    Which means one thing.

    Lederhosen incoming very soon.

Here is the current crop of players flogging the club's official lager, but before long Rodriguez, Boateng and the rest will upgrade to bicep-straining steins.

    Bayern v Wolfsburg (19:30 BST)

    The teams are in.

Bayern Munich leave James Rodriguez on the bench despite the on-loan Colombian's excellent display against Schalke. Sven Ulreich continues between the sticks in place of the injured Manuel Neuer.

Bayern: Ulreich, Rafinha, Hummels, Boateng, Rudy Ribery, , Vidal, Muller, KImmich, Robben, Lewandowski

On-loan Liverpool striker Divock Origi leads the line for Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg: Casteels, William, Verhaegh, Camacho, Malli, Origi, Uduokhai, Guilavogui, Arnold, Tisserand, Itter

OK , so second by just a point and beating Anderlecht 3-0 in your opening Champions League group game is hardly Elm-Street levels of nightmares.

But, given Bayern's vice-like grip on German football, it has not been the smoothest of starts to the season for Bayern.

Tonight Wolfsburg are in town. Time to get the party rocking like Ocktoberfest.
