    Girona 0-1 Real Madrid

Every time Girona have gone forward, they have caused a few problems for Real Madrid.

Again full-back Pablo Maffeo bombs down the right and his cutback into the six yards box is whacked clear by French defender Raphael Varane.

Defending at one end, to scoring at the other.

Girona hit the woodwork and then concede within a matter of 20-30 seconds.

Cristiano Ronaldo cuts in from the left and his low strike is parried into the danger area by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Isco reacts quickest to tap in from close range.

Poor goalkeeping, he should have pushed the ball out wide instead of his own six yard box.

    Girona 0-0 Real Madrid

Pablo Maffeo's cross-shot loops over Kiko Casilla and comes back off the post.

    Girona 0-0 Real Madrid

    Clever.

A free-kick is dinked into the box and at first you think it is going straight into the hands of Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

But the back lift on it, a bit like a Rory McIlroy chip, allows the ball to spin back into the path of Cristian Portu, but he cannot direct his shot on target from a tight angle.

Girona, in their striped red and white shirts, are putting themselves about in the early stages.

It will be difficult to maintain this intensity for the full 90 minutes, so Real Madrid will need to be patient to get the breakthrough.

  6. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Girona 0-0 Real Madrid

Loud jeers from the home supporters as the world's best player Cristiano Ronaldo gets a touch on the ball for the first time.

Wouldn't antagonise him too much if I were you.

Girona v Real Madrid (15:15 GMT)

Plenty of Premier League interest in the Girona starting line-up. On-loan Manchester City full-back Pablo Maffeo is in the backline, as is former Stoke defender Marc Muniesa. Ex-Middlesbrough striker Cristhian Stuani leads the line.

Girona XI: Bounou, Maffeo, Bernardo, Juanpe, Muniesa, Benitez, Portu, Granell, Pons, Garcia, Stuani.

All the usual suspects start for Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo is up top with Karim Benzema.

Real XI: Casilla, Hakimi, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Kroos, Casemiro, Modric, Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema.

Every time Real Madrid step onto a field it's a must-win game.

Not because they're the biggest club in the world, or because they're the champions, but because their rivals Barcelona just keep on winning.

Ernesto Valverde's runaway team is steamrollering everything in front of them, now it's over to Zinedine Zidane's side to try and keep pace.
