Oh, the ball just won't quite sit for a strike. George Saville turns one way and then the other in the box but just that fraction of time and space eludes him for the shot.

    Four minutes have been added.

Look at what Michael O'Neill has done for his country. He’ll want to do club management, and when that time comes, we'll miss him. He’s done unbelievably well. It'll be so disappointing if it ends with a penalty decision like that.

Into the final five minutes of this first leg. Still time for the home side to rescue something.

Switzerland make two changes in quickish succession. Fabian Frei on for Blerim Dzemaili and Admir Mehmedi for Steven Zuber.

Is this one of the best kits in world football or worst?

A joy to have them at the World Cup? The mix of somewhat out there kit and groovy hairstyles in this Croatia squad makes them a lovable bunch.

Greece's Anastasios Bakasetas has seen enough of Luka Modric's floppy hair tonight and duly boots the midfielder from behind. A chop if ever you saw one, in the book you go my son.

You do get the sense that this ref is doing this by numbers. Free-kicks going one way and then the other with little consistency. The latest benefits Northern Ireland as Switzerland are penalised for a coming together in the box following a corner.

Penalty? A ball is swung to the back post where Josh Magennis is challenging with Ricardo Rodríguez. The ball bounces off the Swiss defenders knee and up and off his chest/shoulder. Not an arm, though. No penalty.

Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic are combining sweetly as Croatia continue to dominate in Zagreb.

The Real Madrid midfielder picks out Inter Milan's Perisic with a great through ball but the shot is blazed over.

Greece badly need a goal to restore hope for the second leg and Kostas Mitroglou heads over when well placed. That could prove crucial.

No denying who the more confident and ambitious side have been from the off here though. The home side have had the brunt of the ball and fired 16 shots at the Greece goal in all.

Long throws, free-kicks, corners. These are Northern Ireland's best weapons tonight. Switzerland are holding firm at the back, though. None shall pass.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 78 mins

    Northern Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

The offside flag saves Northern Ireland as Switzerland come forward. It is a flick from Haris Seferovic that prompts the flag. It is his final touch, with Breel Embolo replacing him.

Northern Ireland also make a change - their final one - withdrawing Kyle Lafferty and sending on QPR striker Connor Washington.

Two big decisions for the referee tonight and he looks to have got them both wrong.

The potential Swiss red card early in the first half and now the penalty and how costly it could be for Northern Ireland.

You fancy they have to score tonight, a second Swiss goal could finish the tie.

Oh, wide. Chris Brunt hits it towards the far top corner but misses by a few yards.

He gambled on the keeper taking a step in the opposite direction.

Now then. Kyle Lafferty is fouled near the edge of the Swiss box and Northern Ireland have a free-kick. What you got Chris Brunt?

Fantastic delivery from Chris Brunt - it's lifted the crowd. Josh Magennis got up a little bit too early - he had a player in a better position behind him.

Big chance for Northern Ireland! Chris Brunt swings a free-kick into the box that finds the head of Josh Magennis, but he can only steer his effort wide of goal. That's the best opening they've had all game.

Another good chance for the Swiss as Xherdan Shaqiri fails to steer a floated ball over the top past Michael McGovern from a tight angle.

Just over 20 minutes to go. Switzerland remain in control. Northern Ireland are simply not seeing enough of the ball. The game is being managed away from them.

David Robinson: Fair enough if Switzerland take the lead with a quality goal & they very well may have done the way the game was going, but the ref has just ruined this game. Ref is the wrong side, Evans has his back turned and was 2 yds away from Shaqiri. It can't be a hand ball.

Nick Clohessy: 2 huge decisions tonight have both gone for the Swiss. The tackle on Dallas should have been a red card, and that was never a penalty. Michael O'Neill can only do so much. You need the officials to do their jobs too and they just haven't tonight.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

The home side's second change sees George Saville come on for Corry Evans. That will likely be the change for the starting lineup in Switzerland.

Jamie Ward is not giving an inch. He shoves, he snaps, he battles away at Denis Zakaria. It brings only a throw, but also gets the home fans on their feet.

OK, so it's not quite Thierry Henry handball against Republic of Ireland level of injustice, but it is a shocker of a decision. That it may be the defining moment in a team's long effort to qualify for a World Cup finals is brutal.
