Newcastle v Man City (19:45 GMT)

    Michael Owen

Michael Owen's winner in September 2005 was the last time Newcastle beat Manchester City in a Premier League fixture, they have drawn three and lost 16 since.

Tonight, City can set a new club record of 20 unbeaten league games against a specific opponent.

In the 1995-96 season, Newcastle held a 10-point advantage at the top of the table at Christmas, which was extended to 12 points in mid-January.

But a collapse from the Magpies and Manchester United winning 13 of their last 15 games saw the trophy head to Old Trafford.

Manchester City will not be taking their lead for granted.

"You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Newcastle and get something. And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it." Mourinho, J. (2017)

Manchester City are unbeaten in their opening 19 games of this season, winning 17 in a row.

The only club in Europe's five biggest leagues to have ever had a longer streak is Bayern Munich, who earned 19 consecutive victories in their 2013-14 title winning season...

No I am not talking about David Warner or Alastair Cook.

Manchester City hit the three figure mark in their last game against Bournemouth.

The last team to have scored more in the English top flight within a single year were Liverpool in 1982, with 106 goals.

City have this game and one more at Crystal Palace on New Years Eve to beat that.

"No, he is not worth it at all. Southampton could have named any price they wanted and Liverpool were desperate. As we have witnessed many times this season, Liverpool are in dire need of a centre-half. He is good, but £75m? Nope.

"He is a good central defender, but for £75m, no way. When Liverpool try and sign a goalkeeper - which they desperately need - they will find the same thing."

  6. Kane interest inevitable - Shearerpublished at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2017

Newcastle v Man City (19:45 GMT)

    harry kane

Real Madrid and Barcelona wanting Harry Kane is "inevitable" but it does not mean the striker will leave Tottenham, says former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer.

Kane, 24, surpassed Shearer's record for Premier League goals in a calendar year with a hat-trick in Tuesday's 5-2 win over Southampton.

His 56 goals in all competitions, including for England, make him the year's top scorer in Europe.

"He would score goals wherever he was," Shearer told BBC Radio 5 live.

Liverpool have just splashed out £75m on a centre-back...

Manager Jose Mourinho of rivals Manchester United has been having a moan saying the £300m he has spent on his squad so far is "not enough".

"We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world," said Mourinho.

He added: "Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers."

    Newcastle

Rafael Benitez makes five changes to the starting line-up that beat West Ham last time out.

Jonjo Shelvey returns in midfield after suspension, Paul Dummett and Chancel Mbemba come into defence while Jacob Murphy and Rolando Aarons attempt to add an attacking edge.

Henri Saivet – who scored the Magpies’ opener at London Stadium – is left out entirely while Dwight Gayle, Christian Atsu, Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark drop to the bench.

    Manchester City XI

Ilkay Gundogan starts in the Manchester City midfield with David Silva left out of the matchday squad.

Leroy Sane drops to the bench for a rest with Bernardo Silva preferred while Danilo comes in for Fabian Delph at left-back.

Sergio Aguero continues up front with Gabriel Jesus on the bench.

Virgil van DijkImage source, Virgil van Dijk

New Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk said in a statement:

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player. Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

"I can't wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton.

I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club."

The saga is finally over, the caveat of "if they had him in their defence..." can be put to bed.

Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool when the transfer window re-opens on 1 January in a world record £75m deal.

The Netherlands international had been expected to join the Reds last summer after he handed in a transfer request.

But a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach for the 26-year-old.

The fee is the most ever paid for a defender.
