A satirical observation from this young Wigan fan and he has another memorable result to add to his list now. Manchester City have, according to research group CIES Football Observatory, the most expensive squad in football and fielded a team last night valued around £349m.

The Wigan team cost considerably less - and indeed their a starting XI that featured eight players signed on free transfers. On-fire goalscorer Will Grigg is their most expensive acquisition at £1.3m.

  3. 'At that level, don't do that'published at 08:32

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey had some strong views on "card-gate" as Anthony Taylor opted for a change of colour for Fabian delph.

"I thought it was a reckless challenge, and rightly a caution," said Halsey, who officiated in the top-flight from 1999-2013. "I thought, 'you've got this spot on'. You can clearly see the yellow card out, and the referee writing Fabian Delph's name and number on the card, and getting ready to issue it.

"To my amazement, he then puts the yellow card away and reaches for the red. At that level, don't do that. If you're not sure, don't give a card, give yourself some thinking time.

"For me, once you've got it out, rightly or wrongly, you've got to go with your decision. He's on the elite group of Uefa referees. If he did that in the Champions League, I don't think he'd referee again in it this season."

John Butcher: Ipswich conceding yet another injury time goal on Sunday. It’s the only thing which you can rely on with Town.

You can rely on them being mid-table in the Championship though can't you John? is that better than the extreme highs and lows of a Portsmouth? but that's a whole new question for another time!

  6. FA Cup quarter-final drawpublished at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

So the draw for the FA Cup quarter-finals now looks like this and I was watching the match last night with a very happy Southampton supporter. But should his defence be terrified?

    SWANSEA/SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY v SPURS/ROCHDALE

    MAN UTD v BRIGHTON

    LEICESTER v CHELSEA

    WIGAN v SOUTHAMPTON

Ties to be played on the weekend of 16/17 March

  7. Unruly scenes at the endpublished at 08:22

Manchester City fans directed their displeasure at some advertising hoardings as the dream of the quadruple evaporated at the DW Stadium. Will there be repercussions? Our man has already been in touch with the FA and when we know, so will you.

  8. 'Commiserations, Sergio'published at 08:17

There was plenty of drama to come, but most of it of a non-footballing nature. As the final whistle sounded, Wigan fans raced on to the pitch and some got a little too close to Sergio Aguero for the star striker's liking.

  9. 'Na, na, na, na, na na, na'published at 08:12

But then a mistake from Kyle Walker, who for some reason chose to leave the ball, Will Grigg latched on to it, held off the City defenders and calmly rolled the ball into the corner of the net, prompting yet another rousing chorus of Gala's nineties dancefloor-filler, turned darts staple, "Freed From Desire", which the Wigan fans have adapted so superbly to read "Will Grigg's on fire, your defence is terrified."

  10. Latics blunt City sharp-shooterspublished at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

City have scored 114 goals this season and had 29 shots last night, but only five were on target. Sergio Aguero needing only two more goals to record his double century for City, was through on goal but superbly denied by Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton.

  11. Tunnel tensionpublished at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

There were variety of views in the BBC studio over the red card decision, and some rather more forcefully expressed differences of opinion in the tunnel on the way back to the changing rooms.

  12. Is it a yellow? no, it's a redpublished at 07:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

Referee Anthony Taylor initially had the yellow card out, but in the ensuing melee, he replaced it for a red, which led to some angry scenes when the first half ended shortly afterwards.
