Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey: "We had a game plan, we worked on it over the last couple of days and implemented it well, and thought we fully deserved points.

"We've got the character in the team to grind out results, but today showed our quality as well. We've not done that enough this season."

On his performance: "I thought I played well, Probably should not have because of my knee but it killed me last week to not play against Liverpool, so I had an injection to play, and always willing to play through the pain for this club."

On a possible England call-up: "I'm not thinking about that, if I do well, who knows, but the main thing is to secure our survival with Newcastle."

Jonjo Shelvey had a good game. Not as good as against Manchester United, where he was my man of the match, but today he has played the ball forward, picked up second balls and been very disciplined with Diame in midfield.

As for Newcastle, they can probably start feeling a little more confident that their Premier League status will be retained. Southampton should be very, very worried.

How big is that point for Swansea, by the way? They played most of the game with 10 men. Both the Swans and Huddersfield have lifted themselves four points above the relegation zone.

At the end of all that, Burnley, in seventh, find themselves only two points behind sixth-placed Arsenal. West Ham are three points above the relegation zone. Both Crystal Palace and Stoke, who are in the bottom three, have a game in hand on the Hammers.

I don't know whether they'll swerve the situation now or make a statement to try to ease the ire and antagonism amongst the supporters. West Ham have got five more home fixtures before the end of the season so it bodes for an even more uncomfortable atmosphere. As a club, they cannot afford to be relegated from the Premier League.

Everton are on their way up to ninth and 37 points. A tally which should ensure safety.
