  1. Party time for Crues

    So after a truly memorable Irish Premiership campaign, the Gibson Cup is on its way back to the Shore Road for the third time in four years.

    After a final day laced with high drama, it was Crusaders who claimed the biggest prize in the local game after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Ballymena United, while nearest challengers Coleraine could only manage a scoreless draw at Glenavon.

    Celebrations, too, for Carrick Rangers, whose win at Warrenpoint means they avoid automatic relegation and they now face a play-off with Newry City.

    But it's the end of the road in the top flight for Ballinamallard, who will play in the Championship next season, despite a win at Glentoran today.

    Coleraine will hope to bounce back from their league title heartache when they take on Cliftonville in the Irish Cup final next Saturday.

    We didn't deserve anything from the game today. From our perspective it was an end of season game and that's they way it looked. Ballinamallard came here with a lot to play for and they put it up to us. We took the opportunity to give some of our young players a chance and that was the only positive that we can draw from the game.

    It's very hard to accept but I have to start by saying that Carrick deserve a lot of credit. They came to our ground and it looked like they were floored but they fought bravely in the last two games, so to Davy [McAlinden] and the players, I congratulate them. For my players, I've had eight matches and one defeat, but eight great performances to be truthful. I couldn't have asked for any more. I came in and my remit was that if we were going down we wouldn't do it with a whimper, and we didn't.

    It was hard-fought - we had to grind something out in the last 15 minutes. But this team never lies down and the last 15 minutes shows what we're made of. It hurt us losing the title last year but I saw in this squad at the start of the season that we would come back strong.

    It's obviously disappointing when you get to this stage but I've a huge amount of pride in the team and the players should be proud of themselves. We started the game well and Jonathan Tuffey made a great save while Darren McCauley hit the bar. It's the fine margins that decide titles. I'd like to congratulate Stephen Baxter and his Crusaders team - it's been a great fight and they are worthy champions.

    Nothing was going to be given to us and you saw what it meant to Ballymena when they scored but I felt we earned the victory. We came at them with everything we had in the last 10 or 15 minutes and this group of players deserve it. Coleraine have also been magnificent and it's difficult for someone to have to lose it on the final day - we had to endure it last year. Of the three championships we have won, this was the best one, for me.

    This is why you play football. It was quite tense - the way we played today, everybody was really edgy. We got the equaliser and in my opinion there was only one team going to win it. It's coincidence that I scored the goal here - I enjoyed my time at Ballymena but this is why I moved on to Crusaders, to win league titles.

    We were really, really flat but that wee man Cushley came on changed everything with a great strike into the bottom corner. We deserve it for our hard work over the season but I thought we had lost it, going 1-0 down. Everybody wanted Coleraine to win it, nobody wanted Crusaders to win it. We have had things go against us this season but we have stuck tgether and we've delivered today.
