Watford may be about to buck that trend of finishing poorly, with Roberto Pereyra the key man so far.

In fact, watching the replays of those goals from the first half, Pereyra played a delightful one-two with Troy Deeney to get down the left before clipping in that measured ball for Andre Gray to head into an empty net for Watford's second goal.

And more of the Hornets' play has come down his wing than anywhere else.

We love a long farewell in football don’t we so this is John Motson’s last Saturday appearance on Match of the Day and the sun has graciously decided to come out for the occasion.

On the face of it there’s not much riding on this game but strictly Watford aren’t mathematically safe just yet and they seem to have perfected the art of finishing Premier League seasons poorly, having done that under Quique Sanchez Flores and Walter Mazzarri.

Watford lead but it should be 3-0 as Troy Deeney saw a poor penalty saved by Martin Dubravka, who also blocked Deeney's follow-up.

Just to clear things up after the penalty, Abdoulaye Doucoure found Andre Gray down the right and the striker backed off as Paul Dummett slid in, expecting him to put it out for a corner.

But the replays show that the defender slid over the ball and into Gray before the ball rolled out. It wasn't malicious but he only touched the man and not the ball.

Newcastle complained but it was a clear penalty.

Troy Deeney plays the penalty towards Martin Dubravka's bottom right but it's not close enough to the corner and the keeper saves.

Deeney has a second bite at the cherry and should have put away the rebound but again it's too close to Dubravka and Newcastle clear.

Florian Lejeune can't do much with Jonjo Shelvey's deep delivery and Watford hack it clear.

That's only the fifth goal of the season for Gray, who made an £11.5m move from Burnley last summer.

It ends a nine-match goal drought, after scoring two in two against Manchester City and Southampton in January.

It wasn't a good couple of seconds for Martin Dúbravka but Watford are the better team at the minute.

Troy Deeney slips in strike partner Andre Gray in the right channel and his low strike is too close to Martin Dubravka, who saves with his feet.

Jonjo Shelvey finds Dwight Gayle on the break but Kenedy's cross is blocked for a Newcastle throw.

Ayoze Perez then runs into a cul-de-sac and Watford clear.

For those expecting a typical end-of-season encounter, that early goal was probably the best thing that could have happened.

If each side were going to play it safe, they're not now. Both are pressing forward whenever they get hold of the ball, although they're yet to create any more opportunities.

Newcastle's start to this game has been sleepy, sloppy, shoddy and I'm sure there's a few other "s" words Rafael Benitez might come up with having already furiously stripped down to his waistcoat (not just his waistcoat obviously!) on the touchline.

Martin Dubravka has made a superb double save to deny Roberto Pereyra and Troy Deeney - and Newcastle just look like they're very much here for the taking.

Looks like Newcastle have finally settled and they've got into Watford's final third a couple of times.

Ayoze Perez's goalbound strike is blocked but it comes off team-mate Kenedy for a goal-kick.

It was dreadful defending by Newcastle but it’s a good finish by Roberto Pereyra. Paul Dummett should have put his foot through it but it’s great awareness to feed Pereyra who finished well.

Watford almost double their lead as Martin Dubravka has to rush out to save from Roberto Pereyra and Troy Deeney in quick succession.

The rebound falls to Etienne Capoue on the edge of the box but he sidefoots it just wide.
