"As a player when you get a little bit older, people are getting faster and stronger. I thought about it at the end of last year but wanted to give it a go for another team.
"It’s an incredible opportunity – I’m grateful to the club. We had a chat last summer and David Wagner asked if I wanted to come onto the staff. I didn’t do it last year but now’s the time."
Retiring Huddersfield midfielder Dean Whitehead to BBC Radio 5 live: "Staying up was a fantastic night for us. After Southampton beat Swansea, we knew we needed a point. To go to Stamford Bridge and perform like we did was heroic, we deserved to celebrate after.
"We had that team spirit at Stoke where you’d run through brick walls for each other. Our dressing room resembles those years. The boss has done an incredible job. We were almost destined for League One when David Wagner arrived.
"He’s come into the club, the first real job he had after Dortmund's under-23s. He came in with freshness and a different style. He transformed our club from top to bottom. He had the backing if the chairman. All the players bought into it."
There is no way Huddersfield will play with the same intensity now they are safe, and a more open game will suit Arsene Wenger's side in his final game in charge.
Prediction:1-1

Huddersfield v Arsenal (15:00 BST)
Today is Arsene Wenger's 1,235th and final game in charge of Arsenal.
The legendary Gunners boss, who won the league and FA Cup double in 1998 and 2002, has not won the Premier League in 14 years - and their sixth-placed finish is their lowest in his 22-year reign.
We are no nearer to knowing who will replace him this summer.
Although Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira are both in contention.
Huddersfield v Arsenal (15:00 BST)
That's right, veteran midfielder Dean Whitehead's playing career comes to an end today - after helping Huddersfield reach the Premier League last season and making a few appearances this season in their return to the top flight.
He will now join the club's coaching staff.
Oh and it's also Arsene Wenger's last game as Arsenal boss.
Huddersfield v Arsenal (15:00 BST)
The end of an era.
He's been there for unprecedented success at the club in the modern game.
He's already announced his decision so he can have a farewell in his final match.
And we will now have to get used to life without this man.
So on behalf of all at BBC Sport...
Au revoir, Dean Whitehead.
