Here are a couple more Macclesfield programmes from Matt Todd's sizable collection.

This frame has a selection of programmes from Macclesfield's first Football League season in 1997-98 and the club's only season in what is now League One.

Bottom right is one from the home league game against Manchester City. Whatever happened to them?

Rick Holden: Why not do what they do in Aus, produce a programme that covers each game for that weeks fixtures. One programme for the Prem. Champ. 1. 2. Have team news etc. Each club could contribute and feature 2x per year

They don't have to be old to be a favourite.

This, from Matt Todd, who has a hefty collection of Macclesfield programmes, comes from the club's trip to Eastleigh on 21 April, when they confirmed promotion back to the Football League.

It cost a little bit more than the one on the right, from the 1929-30 season when the club were in the Cheshire League.

Norwich have run a project this year called 'patterns of play' whereby each week a different artist contributes their interpretation of the club to the front cover. A nice touch was that each spine has a spot showing the league position of the club at the date of the match!

A programme featuring Dulka Prague definitely wins the hipster award so far.

Can anyone beat it? Have you got a programme with a more obscure team?

Maybe you went to a Croatian third division match on holiday last year?

There is a thriving market for old programmes, with collectors and dealers across the country.

These were sent in by Chorley-based Ian Wilson, who reckons he has hundreds of thousands in total.

    Yes, Claire!

Proper matchday programme organisation. I like the dedication.

Have you got a similar system on your bookshelf?

Notts County chairman Alan Hardy has also been speaking about the future of matchday programmes.

"It doesn't make us any money, it loses us a stack of money," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"It's one of those historic football things isn't it? Unfortunately it's a dying art, people just aren't buying them.

"Season by season it's going down 20% every year. Nottingham Forest interestingly tried a digital version which didn't work either, which was a shame.

"We did think about doing that to produce to put on the website. The communications manager says the numbers are just going down."

"That's the way we'll go, the vote will go we don't need to do it mandatory,"

"We'll do it locally rather than a national and a dozen pages. It's more or less one person producing it all year."

It was news to me that it was mandatory for clubs to produce match programmes for every game. Hard to justify really. Apart from beginning/end of season and special occasions I don't see the appeal of them. They're bland and full of adverts usually.

I have saved football programmes since I first started going to games in the late 1970s and as I have spent the last 20 years of my life going to two games a week, that is a lot that are presently stored at home.

Barnsley was a particular favourite and, given they are in the news, so too Rangers from the European away games in the early years of the Graeme Souness era.

And what about the Charlton v Fulham game on 27 December, which included manager's notes from Les Reed. But he had already been sacked.

Football programmes are fundamental to the English football culture. They must be produced for match day use in the hand. They are great for starting conversations in the stands, great for checking on opponents during play and great mementoes. EFL - think of the legacy you have inherited and the legacy you are being asked to throw away! Don't! No debate! (Internet is not the only world we occupy and, contrary to some half-baked suggestions of relying on it, it isn't actually a real world nor should it become the only world).
