Here's some more from Steven Gerrard talking about his old Liverpool midfield sparring partner Jordan Henderson.

"He had a very strong World Cup and strong Champions League run for Liverpool. I know the player and I know the person. I spoke to him last night after the game and said ‘look I know you’ll be hurting right now but you should back into the country with your head held high.’

"His time will come. He’s getting so close to one of these big trophies and it will be the making of him.People will realise the player and leader he is when he gets one of those big trophies above his head.

"He has absolutely emptied the tank for both Liverpool and England this year. He’s had a fantastic season."

  2. 'Modric is out there on his own'published at 09:19 British Summer Time 12 July 2018

Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard has been chewing the fat this morning on Robbie Savage's World Cup Breakfast on BBC Radio 5 live.

Here's what he's had to say about England's defeat to Croatia.

“It was a difficult ask for them, they were playing against two of the best midfielders in the world. I said after the Champions league final that Luka Modric is out there on his own.

"It’s very difficult to control a midfield when he is in there and in such good form. It was no surprise and it was one of the key battles that was going to be a big part pf the outcome of the game. Unfortunately it went against us. In the first 45 minutes we controlled the game and were looking very strong."

Wayne: Gareth Southgate has already righted a lot of wrongs, but it’s important he drums this habit of sitting on a lead out of the squad. It’s been an issue for too long now. Got away with it against Colombia, but not last night. Great tournament though.

Christopher: This is the best World Cup for England that I can remember. And oh so very much better than 4 years ago in Brazil. Reckon we can keep improving and have a real crack at Euro 2020.

    Arise Sir Harry.

Honestly if I had to pick one player to adopt the persona of an England fan out on the pitch it would be tough to look beyond this chap.

Ralph, I might be wrong but sounds like you're going all Crowded House this morning.

Also Ben - don't mean to be doom-monger or anything but perhaps I should refrain from mentioning what happened to England after they last reached a World Cup semi-final.....

Our chief football reporter Phil McNulty is always on the money when it comes to England. And as you might imagine he kept himself busy last night.

He says, "England's devastated players could barely drag themselves off the turf as they slumped in front of their fans at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium."

However, "they can return to England as heroes." Read more here.

Dave: Devastated by England’s loss to Croatia watching on a big screen in Saudi Arabia. We have definitely some stars in this team. I’m in deep pain this morning, only made worse by the insufferable work I have to do today, before the weekend.

Ralph: Football HAS come home, the whole nation has hope for the future - that is solely down to Gareth Southgate and the England team. Come home with pride lads. Isn't it funny the weather has changed now England's dream is over - always take the weather with you!

Ben: Gutted for the Lads might have shed a tear or two BUT also massively proud, this is the start of something special, it's coming home in 2022.

PTB: As a Scotsman I genuinely do not understand the hype around this England team. Not sour grapes in any way but did England beat anyone they shouldn't have beaten? A functional team that played average football and in reality a missed opportunity due to a very favourable draw.

Tim: Deflated, but not disappointed and not angry. Perhaps the first time I've been able to say that after an England exit. The team gave it everything they had. Very proud, but sad the wonderful ride had to stop.

Chris: The whole country has fallen back in love with the England team this summer. The atmosphere has been brilliant - the songs, the support, the flags, the belief. They’re not bringing a trophy back but they can come back knowing they gave everything, and that everybody is proud of them. Even non-football fans have got caught up in it. Which is why ladies and gentlemen - football DID come home.
