So, Leeds begin Marcelo Bielsa's reign as manager with a convincing victory over the Championship pre-season promotion favourites.

"It’s ironic to be relegated, not perform particularly well and then be favourites," Stoke boss Gary Rowett said at his press conference this week.

What can we say? The man has obviously been looking at our predictions.

This week, we asked a host of BBC Sport journalists to have a go at guessing the final Championship table - and once their answers were collated, they had Stoke to finish top.

The making of a good side is not just what you do on the ball, but what you do without it, as well.

Defence starts from the front, and the energy and work-rate of this team was outstanding.

Kemar Roofe was great, but it wasn't just him - Pablo Hernandez, Ezgjan Alioski and Samu Saiz were brilliant in that department, too, and that's what Marcello Bielsa is asking for.

I think everyone was excellent in their positions today.

It's very difficult to choose one player, and that's the way it should be, but when you look at Samu Saiz's performance - he was a contender for Man of the Match.

We really saw what he was capable of today.

We feared the club might not have any replacements for Ronaldo Vieira, but Mateusz Klich is arguably more attacking, and got himself into some really good positions.

The Leeds backline was really assured today - and Luke Ayling got forward to cause loads of problems in the opposition half.

Leeds United's Kemar Roofe speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it was a massive statement but we’re not getting carried away. We worked hard for six weeks today.

"Everyone had a feeling of what Bielsa was going to be like. He’s drilled us for six weeks and we’ve shown it today. Everyone’s struggling at the end of the game now and that means we’ve put in the work.

"We’re a team and whoever comes out here puts in the work. At the end of the day, we’re all here to get the three points - and that's what we did today."

Leeds United's Liam Cooper speaks to Sky Sports: "There’s always a bit of anxiety in the second half when you concede when you’re defending a two-goal lead, but I don’t get on the scoresheet often so it was nice to get on there today.

"Barry Douglas’ stats speak for themselves, and if he keeps putting it in there, he’ll be there or thereabouts [in the assist charts].

"We’ve done nothing. At the end of the day, it’s the first game of the season. We started well last year and we’ve learned our lessons. We will take it game-by-game and that’s all we can do."

The Yorkshire Evening Post's Leeds United reporter Phil Hay liked what he saw.

Invention, intensity, intelligence - that was very compelling and very promising from Leeds.

For Gary Rowett's Stoke, it's been another afternoon they'd rather forget and they had all the hallmarks of a recently-relegated side.

Leeds were tough today, too, in responding to set-backs - watch this space.

Kemar Roofe is the TV Man of the Match, and that's fine by me - his work-rate and movement have been outstanding all day.

It poses a nice problem for Marcelo Bielsa - let's not forget that Leeds' big marquee signing of the summer, Patrick Bamford, has been sat on the bench today.

Bielsa's style demands his players move intelligently off the ball, and Roofe has done that time and again today.

Joe Allen forces Bailey Peacock-Farrell into a point-blank save as he claws Tom Ince's corner towards goal, but Leeds are rapid on the counter.

Stuart Dallas bursts into the box, but Morritz Bower springs back into defence like taut elastic to smuggle the Leeds man away.

Five added minutes here...

Leeds make their final two substitutions of the day, as Samu Saiz makes way for Lewis Baker and Jack Harrison replaces Ezgjan Alioski.

Standing ovations for both of those players, and rightfully so after how they've bossed proceedings today.

Stavros: You're losing 3-1 with 15 minutes to go and you see Benik Afobe walking to be substituted like his team are winning 3-0. Not good for the Stoke fan #bbcefl, external

You're right, Stavros. You can't really single out Afobe when the whole Stoke team have been poor, but their lack of commitment when defending set-pieces and the total lack of inclination to close anyone down is almost remarkable. They look so resigned already.

It's such a marked contrast to Leeds' constant pressing.

Stoke whip a ferocious cross to the far post and Peter Crouch manages to tip a dangerous header goalwards.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell uses what must be his fingernail as he prods the ball away at full stretch - in the direction of Joe Allen.

The Welshman persists tirelessly but he can't quite get the ball under control as he rushes to meet the rebound.

"It’s ironic to be relegated, not perform particularly well and then be favourites," Stoke boss Gary Rowett said at his press conference this week. "You have to turn it around quickly because you’ve got used to losing a little bit."

Rowett's warning is ringing true so far.

Stoke have the small challenge of Brentford next, who opened their Championship account by hammering newcomers Rotherham 5-1.

Bees boss Dean Smith actually summed up that game by saying "you don't get many opportunities to go and push the goal difference up like that."

If Stoke are this meek next week...

James McClean's smart free-kick is turned away by Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Stoke sling the ball back into the box quickly.

Peter Crouch is causing all manner of problems in the box already, and as he collides with Peacock-Farrell the ball zips up in the air.

It falls towards Martins Indi, but the height is awkward and he glances his header over the bar.

Mateusz Klich comes off, too, as Leeds make their first substitution - Stuart Dallas is the man to take his place.

Klich has enacted Marcelo Bielsa's brief perfectly today and will be pleased with his day's work, especially his goal.

Benik Afobe makes way for Peter Crouch in Gary Rowett's final substitution.

Afobe has has an oddly quiet game against Leeds' centre backs in Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi, who have patrolled him manfully.

You can't argue the Wolves loanee has received anywhere near enough service, but he's done little in general play, either.

Crouch will have to make more of an impact.

Arguably a little premature to be thinking about man of the match candidates, but Kemar Roofe, Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernandez have all been excellent for Leeds.

They've been fearless going forward and at the heart of what's been so captivating about Leeds' offensive play.

But how could you overlook Samu Saiz, whose off-the-ball work has been tireless aside from his vision for the opener? Kalvin Phillips, Barry Douglas and Luke Ayling have also all kept Leeds ticking over in what's been a breathless performance.
