So an emphatic and easy victory for Liverpool, who can rightly have supreme confidence in how they are playing right now.

Southampton? Well, meh is probably about the best word to sum them up today.

Jurgen Klopp's side go top of the table with their sixth straight Premier League win, having also beaten Paris St-Germain in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

Southampton fall to 14th. The visitors weren't totally abject but that early own goal wrecked their gameplan and they had no answer.

Liverpool have won their first seven games in all competitions to start the season for the first time in club history.

And it was very, very easy.

Liverpool clear the corner and break forward.

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have the Saints defence retreating and panicking but Mane's ball through to Salah is delayed and the Egypt winger is offside again.

Substitute Charlie Austin cracks in a rare shot for Southampton, forcing Liverpool keeper Alisson into his first save of the day.

Just the 90 minutes to get there.

Two minutes of added time. Saints have a corner...

Mohamed Salah does not have his second of the day.

The ball is bobbling around the Saints area after the Egypt winger gets free down the right and slides in a cross before heading off the pitch.

It finally breaks to James Milner, whose effort is blocked into the path of the returning Salah as he swings it into the net.

Salah streaks off in celebration but the flag is up and that's rightly disallowed for offside.

The corner is cleared but Andrew Robertson comes forward to find Mohamed Salah, whose ball in is headed out towards the Scot.

Robertson lines it up and dips a volley just over the bar. Close.

If you dropped into this game and the score wasn't visible, you might think Southampton were defending with their lives to hold onto a 1-0 lead.

Instead their defending deep trying not to be on the end of a thrashing.

Another ball over the top sees Liverpool win their fourth corner of the game.

James Milner tries to bend in a pass round the corner to find the onrushing Sadio Mane but Alex McCarthy is on hand.

Again Mane gets in down the left and again McCarthy scurries out to deal with the threat.

Mohamed Salah gets past Wesley Hoedt and has options to his left but chooses to run right at Jannik Vestergaard.

The Egypt winger bundles it round the Dane but Alex McCarthy is alert and comes out to smother the danger.

Sadio Mane tries an audacious back-heel, attempting to play in Mohamed Salah on goal, because why not in this situation?

It doesn't come off, mind.

Saints are just sitting very deep, determined not to get embarrassed here.

It's a passing exercise for Liverpool in midfield, with the occasional foray forward.

Trent Alexander-Arnold overhits a pass and it's a goal-kick for the visitors.

Third and final change for Liverpool as summer signing Naby Keita is on for Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Reds have got a heck of a bench today.

Mario Lemina tries to slide in Shane Long but it's too close to Joel Matip, who is fouled by the frustrated Irishman.

Southampton continue to string some nice passes together and are playing positive football in trying to at least limit the damage.

But that damage is so extensive, there is clearly no way back in this game for the Saints. It's so comfortable for Liverpool right now.

Liverpool work from the edge of their own area out right for Trent Alexander-Arnold to pick out Mohamed Salah's run down the right-hand channel.

Saints get back to repel the danger for a spell before the hosts lift a cross back into the area that Alex McCarthy just about punches clear.

Roberto Firmino cuts back and deftly slips in Andrew Robertson, whose cross is headed behind by an alert Ryan Bertrand.

Mohamed Salah's corner is too close to Alex McCarthy and the Saints keeper grabs it.

It's a double change for Southampton - but no Charlie Austin.

Stuart Armstrong and Jan Bednarek are on for Oriol Romeu and Matt Targett.

You get the sense both sides wouldn't mind this one just being over with.

And Virgil van Dijk is now being escorted from the field by the physios. Liverpool will hope that's nothing too serious.
