It's a huge blow. It means Brendan Rodgers can't go with the target man he likes, but Griffiths is an able replacement. The only issue there is is he match sharp?

  2. AEK look for improvementpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    AEK Athens v Celtic (1-1, 19:00)

AEK Athens boss Marinos Ouzounidis is in no mood to gamble on a 0-0 draw.

"Some might say the first match leaves room for thinking about not conceding a goal," he said. "First, we need the performance to be better than it was in the first leg and second, we want to try to win the match.

"We are not going into the match thinking that we have to take a goalless draw. That is not our objective. Our objective is to win so we can proceed to the next round."

  3. Celtic aim to show 'true face'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    AEK Athens v Celtic (1-1, 19:00)

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was in bullish mood at yesterday's media conference.

"We have had a number of these big games. We want to show our true face in terms of the quality we can play but also the mentality and we look forward to showing that.

"Qualification in this competition is obviously very important for us. We have done that in the last couple of seasons and the main reason, from a football perspective, is to compete at the highest level of the game. The Champions League is that in European football.

"We have enjoyed our experiences in it and we want that to continue. There is always the threat we may not qualify but we can't really think of that. We are not planning on going out, we are planning on playing well enough to get a result. We played well enough last week and got punished for one mistake so we have to learn from that and this group has shown in the last couple of years that they can come through that. We are excited about it."

  4. Simunovic starts for Celtic, no Edouardpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    AEK Athens v Celtic (1-1, 19:00)

The big news for Celtic is the absence of striker Odsonne Edouard, with Leigh Griffiths leading the line in place of the injured Frenchman.

With Kristoffer Ajer suspended and Dedryck Boyata unavailable, Jozo Simunovic takes over in central defence - the only other change from the first leg.

Striker Moussa Dembele is fit enough for a place on the bench after recovering from a hamstring problem.

AEK skipper Petros Mantalos, who was absent from the first leg due to injury, is also among the substitutes.

  5. Champions League hopes on the line for Celticpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    AEK Athens v Celtic (1-1, 19:00)

This is a HUGE night for Celtic.

With the tie balanced at 1-1, Brendan Rodgers' side need to score in Athens to have any chance of reaching the play-off round for the Champions League.

It's about prestige, it's about status, it's about finances.

Champions League football helps to attract top players and brings in top dollar.

Qualifying for the group stage brings in a basic entry level of around €15m in Uefa cash, while the Europa League offers just under €3m - and that's just for starters.
