But the visitors took just five minutes to hit back as Jevani Brown cuts in from the right and bends a shot into the top corner with his left foot - 1-1.

The mood around Villa Park is more optimistic now than it has been all season, after that quick start.

Villa have lost their past five league games against Swansea, all in the Premier League between April 2014 and March 2016.

But they're on course to end that run as it stands.

Thomas Frank's Brentford have started brightly against Bristol City, but the league's top scorer, Neal Maupay, misses from six yards.

The only goal to report so far in League One is an early Ryan Colclough opener for mid-table Scunthorpe at Wycombe.

As well as trying to start the Dean Smith era with a win, Villa are also trying to move up in to the top half, having not won in four games.
