Aston Villa travel to Preston today looking to keep their play-off bid on track after Wednesday's win at Swansea ended a run of three games without a win.

Bristol City have shown perfect midtable form so far this season with eight wins, eight draws and eight defeats from their 24 games so something will have to give today when they hosts struggling Rotherham.

Swansea host out-of-sorts Wigan, with the Latics looking to end a run of four straight defeats.

Lowly Bolton host Stoke. A second successive win for the Trotters could see them move away from the bottom three.

  13. Villa recall Elphick from Hull loanpublished at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2018

Aston Villa have recalled centre-back Tommy Elphick from his season-long loan deal at Hull City.

The transfer window doesn't officially open for another 57 and a half hours (if you're counting) but some clubs have already started doing business.

Sheffield United announced the loan signing of Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell until the end of the season on Friday.

However, the England Under-21 international can't feature until next Saturday's FA Cup third round tie against Barnet.

Just the one early kick off in the EFL today.

Bristol Rovers lead 1-0 at Oxford United in League One thanks to Alex Jakubiak's early goal.

There are about 30 minutes remaining at the Kassam Stadium and a win for the Pirates would move them clear of the relegation zone.

    Millwall v Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham ForestImage source, Rex Features

A lot can change in four weeks in football.

It might only have been 28 days since Nottingham Forest last won in the Championship but the picture for manager Aitor Karanka has certainly altered since their 2-0 victory against Ipswich on 1 December.

The Reds have drawn two and lost two of their past four games to slip to 10th in the table and it's been reported that Karanka could be in danger of losing his job at the City Ground.

They visit a Millwall side who will start the day one point clear of the relegation zone.

    West BromImage source, Rex Features

Despite scoring twice to salvage a late draw against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Norwich saw their lead over third-placed West Brom cut to two points after the Baggies beat Wigan on Wednesday.

They host managerless Sheffield Wednesday today, while the Owls' Steel City rivals Sheffield United, in fourth, host Blackburn.

Fifth-placed Middlesbrough, with just one win in their past five league games, host bottom side Ipswich.

Seventh-placed Birmingham and eighth-placed QPR know they could end the day (and the year) in the top six with wins over Brentford and Reading respectively should Boro and Derby slip up.

  18. Will Leeds go marching on?published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2018

Leeds v Hull; Norwich v Derby

    Leeds UnitedImage source, Rex Features

It's been a superb festive period for Leeds United so far.

The Championship leaders came back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa on Sunday thanks to a late winner from Kemar Roofe.

Roofe then repeated the trick (and then some) with a stoppage-time double to give them a 3-2 win against Blackburn that means they start today six points clear of third-placed West Brom.

They host in-form Hull City today, with the Tigers having won four of their past five games.

Arguably game of the day comes at Carrow Road where it's second-placed Norwich against sixth-placed Derby.

The Rams are without a win in three and they'll be targeting a win today to get back in automatic promotion contention.

    • Middlesbrough v Ipswich
    • Millwall v Nottingham Forest
    • Norwich v Derby
    • Preston v Aston Villa

    • Sheffield United v Blackburn
    • Swansea v Wigan
    • West Brom v Sheffield Wednesday
  20. How to follow that?published at 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2018

    Kemar RoofeImage source, Rex Features

This season's EFL has thrown up more than its share of dramatic finishes but nothing to compare to Wednesday's scenes.

Going into the final minute of their respective games, Championship leaders Leeds and second-placed Norwich were losing 2-1 and 3-1 respectively and the title race was in danger of being blown wide open.

    Cue absolute madness.

Kemar Roofe scored twice for Leeds in injury-time to secure a 3-2 win over Blackburn and, not to be outdone Onel Hernandez did the same for Norwich to give the Canaries a point in a 3-3 draw with Nottingham Forest.

What does today have in store for us?
