    Mourinho leaves Man Utd

Just come out of an important meeting and wonder what the heck is going on? Here's a recap...

    • Mourinho sacked with immediate effect
    • New caretaker boss to be appointed until end of the season
    • NOT Carrick, Butt or Wenger
    • Pogba deletes tweet shortly after announcement

Excellent point Tom. Why would Pochettino want to swap Spurs for Stretford? Discuss.

Tom: Disrespectful of the media, and @GNev2, external especially, to be linking Poch with United. He’s just signed a 6yr deal. Spurs have finished above United 3 out of the last 5 seasons, have a £1bn stadium opening and a far better squad. Aren’t Spurs now the bigger club?

Like many relationships it all started with doey-eyed optimism between Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. Then it ended in an acrimonious (we assume) split.

Here's how the Mou-chester United dream turned sour...

James Buck: Lots of Man United fans seem to have forgotten Pogba's performances in the latter stages of the World Cup. Maybe they should be excited about a new manager who can get that out of him rather than get upset over a tweet.

Lance Harrington: It's more likely that Pogba's tweet was a scheduled one, and nothing to do with Mourinho's exit. The photo was something to do with an Adidas campaign, so probably not even done by Pogba himself. Just unfortunate timing, nothing more sinister than that.

  10. 'Poch meets three key principles'published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Mourinho leaves Man Utd

More from Reds Devils legend Gary Neville: "There will be others who say 'no' about Pochettino, but Man Utd have tried managers who have won European Cups, managers who have won multiple leagues, managers who have had that solid grounding in the Premier League.

"My view is they need someone who meets the three key principles of that football club - the promotion of youth, entertaining football and to win football matches.

"So at this moment in time, I see him - and people will suggest that he has not won a trophy yet at Tottenham, but with a net spend of -£29m, or something over the last four years, he could not have done more. He has done the most incredible job and I do think he is the person who is the most outstanding candidate."

  11. 'Pochettino is the man for the job'published at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Mourinho leaves Man Utd

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, speaking to Sky Sports News: "I said last season that the next manager of Man Utd should be Pochettino.

"If I look at the values of United, you look at Pochettino's belief in young players at Southampton and with Tottenham.

"You look at his performance levels and style of play, the way in which he carries himself at all times - publicly and in private - I have been fortunate enough to spend two or three days at Tottenham's training ground. And for me, he just feels like the most ideal candidate."

Paul Lummis: Christmas has come early!!! Now all we need is somebody to come in and re-enforce the idea of playing the Manchester United way - as fans we're willing to be patient with building a winner as long as the coach will bring attractive football back to Old Trafford.

Shaun McCann: Jose getting the sack was kind of inevitable. We could have taken the relative lack of success we are going through currently if only the football was entertaining but that was dour and boring too.

Jack Coleman: Derby fan, so a prem ‘neutral’. It’s nice to see the demise of Man Utd, they have become the club they mocked in the 90s 00s. Struggle is good for the club though, makes them appreciate how good they had it. Think they must return to their foundation, faith in youth.

I tell you who will be gutted by Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester... the Lowry Hotel.

Mourinho has been living at the five-star hotel since arriving in the city in the summer of 2016.

A swanky suite, according to the Lowry website, costs £600 a night - meaning Mourinho must have racked up a bill of over HALF A MILLION quid in the meantime.

And that doesn't even include any late-night pizzas...

  15. 'An issue with Pogba'published at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Ian Dennis
Radio 5 live senior football reporter

There is a difference between Jose Mourinho as a manager and Jose Mourinho as a person. There is a mask behind the manager.

There is clearly an issue with Pogba. He rejoined the club for what was then world record £89m. He signed a five-year deal in 2016. We talk about the marketing of Manchester United and the financial aspects that are at play. When you are talking about a player like that then that is a powerful player and if you are not going to embrace him then there are going to be issues.

Michael Dickson: Let’s get Moyes back in for the last five months of his contract... that would still be running... if we hadn’t gone through 3 managers since then... Time for Ed and the Board to answer for this too!

Ol Nulty: Something had to change. And Jose did not do himself a favours. We now need a proper Utd man to take the caretaker position. Still lots to play for this season and pride being one of them. Ryan Giggs for me.
