  11. 'There was no point crossing from a corner' - Redknapppublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2019

Harry Redknapp played for West Ham from 1965 to 1972

Former West Ham manager and player Harry Redknapp remembers playing against Gordon Banks while he was at Stoke, and specifically recalls when the Potters keeper denied West Ham a place in the 1972 League Cup final, which Stoke eventually won.

"He was a true legend of the game, as were all the 1966 World Cup-winning team. He was a wonderful character, an amazing goalkeeper and a great bloke.

"My big memory apart from the World Cup was that there was no point crossing the ball from a corner because he would come out and catch it. Then in the 1972 League Cup semi-final playing for Stoke, he saved a penalty against my team West Ham, and it was a wonderful save to stop Geoff Hurst taking us to Wembley.

"He brought me down for the penalty, and Geoff took it, you wouldn't want anybody better to take it at a vital stage of the game, but the only problem was that Gordon Banks was in goal."

Here's what the legendary Brazilian forward said about that iconic moment in football history:

Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton shared England goalkeeping duties after Gordon Banks

Former England and Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence has been paying his tributes to Gordon Banks.

Clemence shared England goalkeeping duties with Peter Shilton after Banks stopped playing for England and says he was always willing to share his knowledge.

"I'm devastated. I’ve known him a long time, and had the pleasure of working with him for the last couple of years with England. He was a mentor for me and the greatest goalkeeper England ever had. He made it look easy and everybody who has played in that position knows it is not. He was a special man and everybody in football is so sad to hear he is leaving us.

"Peter Shilton and myself were sharing the job [after he stopped playing for England] and we knew we were following a great, but we had time to work with him and it was great to pick up things from him. He was always willing to talk to us.

"He was a wonderful man and we knew we had big shoes to fill and that helped us as well. We had to keep the standard of English goalkeeping at the level Gordon had set."
