England's dreams of reaching their first Women's World Cup final were dashed as Steph Houghton's late penalty was saved in a dramatic semi-final loss to holders the United States.

Alex Morgan had given the USA a 2-1 lead after Ellen White had cancelled out Christen Press' opener in the first half.

And in a dramatic second-half, White had a goal disallowed for offside before winning the penalty which Houghton could not convert.

"I cannot ask anything more from my players, they left everything out on the field. We knew it was going to be an open game and I felt they were starting to run out of steam in the second half.

"That is football and Steph Houghton has probably had the best season of her career. She had the courage to take the penalty and then keep playing football after. She is an amazing person and a world class footballer."

England striker Ellen White speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm going to cry. I'm devastated not to get to the final. All I feel is pride for my team-mates. USA had an amazing match and we just couldn't match them. I'm proud to be English and I wish them all the best in the final.

"We gave everything. In the first half we were sloppy. We got ourselves back into the game with the goal and it's bitterly disappointing. We've got an unbelievable squad and we had so much belief that we'd get to that final but we just couldn't do that on the day."

Football is the winner today, it was a fantastic semi-final.

They have taken the game to the next level and if you look at the fans in the stadium, you can see no-one is disappointed.

Another devastating night for England in a World Cup semi-final.

USA defender Becky Sauerbrunn has been speaking about the penalty she conceded, and the save from Alyssa Naeher on Steph Houghton's kick.

"I think there was contact but I also thought she was going to score if I didn't make contact. I haven't seen the foul but obviously it was given as a PK.

"It really wasn't this 'oh no' moment, it was more like this is soccer, let's deal with it and move on.

"When she saved it, I think I said 'I love you'."

England goalkeeper Carly Telford: "It was devastating. Heart-breaking. It's not how we thought the journey would end.

"I knew yesterday afternoon I would be playing. I had 24 hours to prepare but I felt like I had been preparing for the whole of my life. I would have preferred to be on the winning side.

"It was end-to-end but you want to be on the winning side no matter what. I hope there are a lot of young girls and boys picking up an England shirt. That's an important message for us.

"I have to give my heart to Steph [Houghton]. It was probably the biggest moment of her career and unfortunately she missed it. But stepping up was inspirational to me."

The USA have won their last 11 matches at the Women’s World Cup; the best winning streak in the tournament’s history.

They are the first side in Women’s World Cup history to reach the final in three successive editions, making their record fifth appearance in total.

She had the courage to take the penalty and then keep playing football after. She is an amazing person and a world class footballer."
