Luton, Barnsley and Bury all promoted

Here ends our live coverage of tonight's EFL drama, which has seen Luton, Barnsley and Bury all promoted, while Tranmere secured a play-off place.

In League One, Portsmouth and Sunderland will have to settle for the play-offs, after their defeats tonight.

We'll be back tomorrow, for another big Championship match. If Derby County win their game in hand at Swansea, they'll be on the brink of the play-offs.

Join us again for that one, won't you? Good night.

  2. Bristol City still in the hunt...published at 22:12 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

Now, back to matters in the Championship: Here's what Bristol City's win has done to the standings in the top eight.

They're just a point off the top six now, but will still need multiple favours from elsewhere, if they're to reach the play-offs. Derby will rule the Robins out of contention, if the Rams beat Swansea tomorrow in their game in hand.

But Lee Johnson's side's hopes are a lot brighter now than they were a short while ago, 1-0 down and facing a Millwall penalty...

  4. Bury are promoted to League Onepublished at 22:05 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

    FT: Tranmere 1-1 Bury

Bury's success on the pitch has been made all the more impressive by a series of challenges off it, with players sometimes paid late and a winding-up petition still to be resolved.

Last Thursday, chairman Steve Dale confirmed he was putting the club up for sale just five months after taking over, suggesting the Shakers' financial situation was "significantly worse" than he had first realised.

The failure to pay March's salaries on time - for which director Matthew McCarthy later apologised - even left one of the club's League Two fixtures in doubt, although a postponement was avoided on the eve of the game.

Bury's promotion charge looked in danger of being derailed by the ongoing financial problems last month, with a run of four losses in five games dragging them back towards the chasing pack.

But Ryan Lowe's side gathered themselves to register back-to-back victories and defy the odds with promotion back to League One.

  5. Barnsley are promoted to the Championshippublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

FT: Portsmouth and Sunderland both lose

After relegation under Jose Morais 12 months ago, to further mar a season clouded by the loss of owner Patrick Cryne, Barnsley's march to promotion under new German boss Daniel Stendel has always looked a distinct possibility.

This is the Tykes' first promotion without the need of play-offs since reaching the Premier League for the first time in 1996-7.

It speaks volumes for the respect with which they are held that five Barnsley players - goalkeeper Adam Davies, defenders Dimitri Cavare and Ethan Pinnock, midfielder Alex Mowatt and striker Kieffer Moore - were named in the PFA League One team of the season.

Their goals have been spread about too - 16 each for Moore and Cauley Woodrow, while Mowatt, Jacob Brown, Mamadou Thiam and Brad Potts have chipped in with a further 29 between them. But a defence, including Liam Lindsay (above), who kept 22 clean sheets, need lauding too.

Now the test for Barnsley, having got back to second-tier level, is to stay there, which they did for eight straight years from 2006 to 2014.

  6. Tranmere seal play-off placepublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

    FT: Tranmere 1-1 Bury

I should also tell you that, as well as this particular result confirming Bury's promotion, the draw also ensures Tranmere's place in the play-offs, as they can no longer be caught by two sides below them.

Meanwhile, Newport's win over Oldham has put County up to seventh, occupying the final play-off spot with just one game to go.

Luton Town's promotion means they will return to the Championship following a 12-year absence which saw the club fall into non-league.

The Hatters were handed two points deductions - being docked 10 points in 2007-08 and 30 points the season after - as they suffered three successive relegations to drop out of the English Football League 10 years ago.

Five years in the National League followed, but the Bedfordshire club are on the rise again after securing a second consecutive promotion.

Former manager Nathan Jones laid the platform for this season's success before his departure to Stoke City in January, and caretaker boss Mick Harford continued an unbeaten run which stretched six months, setting a new club record of 28 league games without defeat before it ended at Charlton earlier this month.

With a longer-term appointment expected in the summer and plans for a new 23,000-capacity stadium gaining traction, the Kenilworth Road outfit will hope they can repeat their late 1980s and early 1990s heydays, when they spent a decade in the top flight.
