Maybe the officials are just making plans for later.

"What do you fancy tonight, a pizza or burger?"

    "Pizza?"

    "Nah, we had that yesterday."

Again, the referee has stopped play and has his fingers to his earpiece.

    Don't ask why, I don't know.

Nobody does, not even the VAR himself.

    Venezuela 0-1 Argentina

Venezuela have got the ball to left-winger Darwin Machis on a couple of occasions now and the Udinese man wants to have a run at Argentina right-back Juan Foyth.

Both times, though, the Tottenham man stands his ground well to snuff out the danger.

It has been a slow start from Venezuela, they are yet to work Argentina goalkeeper Franco Armani into making a save.

    Venezuela 0-1 Argentina

Another VAR check as Lionel Messi's run in the box sees the ball bounce up and come off Venezuela defender Ronald Hernandez's right hand.

It wasn't deliberate and after a look at the incident, the ref again waves play on.

'Not deliberate' doesn't matter anymore though, does it?

The referee dealt with that incident but there was a longggg VAR delay for another problem.

Venezuela have not got going, feisty midfielder Tomas Rincon trying to get his troops going.

The Torino player, who looks a bit like Gennaro Gattuso, goes in late on Rodrigo De Paul, leaving the Argentina player in a heap.

Rincon is rightly given a yellow card.

    Lovely finish.

Argentina have taken an early lead.

Argentina well on top in the early exchanges.

Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez earns a corner for his side which is flicked on and almost converted by German Pezzella.

Needed Lionel Messi or Sergio Aguero there, the defender could not sort out his feet to control the ball in the six yard box and it rolls through to goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez.

They have lost four of the last five finals and the last of their triumphs came back in 1991, led by the brilliant Gabriel Batistuta.

Despite his heroics for Barcelona, superstar Lionel Messi continues to have a blemish on his international record. Will this finally be his year?
