    Sonny Bradley

Lift-off at Kenilworth Road. Sonny Bradley collects a ball on the bounce following a clearance to the edge of the box and arrows a thumping drive into the back of the net on the half-volley.

Darren Randolph can only watch. Absolute ripper. Stunning drive and the atmosphere is bubbling. Great reply.

It all came from smart footwork from Calum McManaman who worked a position wide right after a driving run from Ryan Tunnicliffe, but Boro clear the cross behind.

    Luton 0-1 Middlesbrough

Luton respond well to going a goal down, and work a smart free-kick routine on the edge of the box trying to catch Middlesbrough out.

It looked like it would be swung in but a low ball to the edge of the box was swept out wide, and Dan Potts was able to sling in a cross but it went behind.

The corner came to nothing, but it's encouraging stuff for Luton. Another free-kick for a foul on Elliot Lee midway inside the Boro half. Cleared.

    Luton 0-1 Middlesbrough

Luton try to play out from the back but Middlesbrough, right up in their faces, almost get another chance as they catch them napping.

The Hatters show their mettle and teeth to stride forward and win a set-piece. The corner comes in, but a venomous shot inside the box is blocked and the Teessiders clear.

Bit of partisan penalty-calling from the home fans comes to no avail. They felt it was a handball.

    Ashley Fletcher

Welcome back to the Championship, Luton Town. Ashley Fletcher powers in a header for Middlesbrough from a beautiful ball by Marvin Johnson - the lesser-spotted winger.

Johnson won a corner with a tricky run, and then whipped in a super dead-ball which was cleared. He had time to measure the second delivery and it showed.

Belting goal. Big task for Luton.

  6. CLOSE!published at 6 mins

    Luton 0-0 Middlesbrough

Typical commentator's curse, as Mpanzu lost the ball cheaply in midfield and Boro slickly worked the ball forward at pace.

Ashley Fletcher worked it onto his left foot but his sizzling low drive just whizzed wide of Simon Sluga's right-hand post.

    Close though from the Teessiders.

    Luton 0-0 Middlesbrough

Luton putting pressure on Boro down the right flank, with Callum McManaman the main outlet for the ball.

Just a word on Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu. He's been with the Hatters since their toil in non-league, and he's not looking out of place at this level either.

    Luton 0-0 Middlesbrough

Set-piece well dealt with by Luton, who are snapping into every 50-50 and every challenge with real intensity.

Bit of fire in both bellies in these early stages. First impressions for the two bosses obviously key.

I'm sure Kenilworth Road looks exactly the same as it did when the pitch was plastic and Steve Foster was bombing around with his headband on. Kingsley Black and David Preece and the like.

The Luton support has popped up in big style. Out in force. Packed in where and when they can.

Boro lining up in the tunnel and looking smart in a Sao Paolo-themed kit. White with a lovely red and black stripe across the middle. Tasty.

Jonathan Woodgate, shirt neck open, sharp suit. He looks cool and composed.

  15. 'I can’t speak highly enough of Tony'published at 19:37 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Luton v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Middlesbrough head coach Jonathan Woodgate spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about his predecessor Tony Pulis and impact that the Welshman has had on his career.

"I played for a year with Tony at Stoke," said former England defender Woodgate. "If I’d have left there and left a bit on him and given a bit, then I might not have got the opportunity I did, so I always learnt the lesson never burn your bridges with that one.

"I can’t speak highly enough of Tony, what he’s helped me with, what he gave me to do as a coach and let me lead sessions and let me do individual meetings, let me do team meetings.

"I couldn’t do this job without his help and his grounding of what he gave me."

    Luton v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

More from boyhood Middlesbrough fan Jonathan Woodgate, who remembered his late father in a BBC Radio 5 Live interview before stepping out as Boro head coach for the start of the season.

He said: "I look up at the sky every now and again and have a little chat with him. I think how proud he would be of me, leading out that team... there’d be no prouder man, that is for sure.

"I know he’ll be with me every step of the way."

Jonathan Woodgate hopes to take some of the plus points from his former managers into his own career, and reminisced about his former boss Sir Bobby Robson when he spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier this week.

"He was someone who I had great respect for when he signed me from Leeds United," said Woodgate. "Obviously I didn’t want to leave Leeds but he was one of the reasons why I left.

"He was a fantastic manager, man management, his enthusiasm on the training pitch, taking sessions as a 70-year-old, running around there, enthusiastic with his players, loving his players, how he spoke to you after a game, how he spoke to you before, he made you feel like the best player.

"If you weren’t playing so well he’d tell you, but you’d walk out his office again thinking you were good. He had that special man management inside him.”

  18. Patience the key for Middlesbrough?published at 19:29 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

It’s been all change at Middlesbrough this summer.

The vastly experienced Tony Pulis departed after falling just short of the play-offs last season, and his replacement is managerial novice Jonathan Woodgate, who will be assisted by his former Leeds and Tottenham team-mate Robbie Keane.

The squad is being reshaped, with big-earning Denmark forward Martin Braithwaite having finally been granted his wish to leave for Spain, while experienced heads Stewart Downing, Jon Mikel Obi and Aden Flint have gone too.

Only three new players have arrived – back-up goalkeeper Tomas Mejias and youngsters Marcus Browne and Marc Bola.

The expectation last season, from both inside and outside the club, was for a sustained promotion challenge. Boro are embarking on a change in philosophy both on and off the pitch, which means there’s an acceptance from chairman Steve Gibson that success may take some time to achieve.

Whether Boro fans share that patience remains to be seen.

Middlesbrough's 2018-19 season was a campaign beset by toxicity around the Riverside, a feeling of promise unfulfilled.

Disillusionment from the stands with the playing style - functional rather than flamboyant - seeped through the fans' passion for the club and the clouds gathered over manager Tony Pulis.

His side failed to extend their season into the play-offs after a late slump in form, and the price paid was a change at the top.

Jonathan Woodgate's appointment has won fans around, as the boyhood Boro lad promises a return to the swashbuckling style that he enjoyed himself as a player at the Riverside.
