To recap, Rory Campbell and Henry Newman from C&N Sporting Risk appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning to explain why their takeover bid failed.

Rory Campbell:“Ultimately we had 72 hours to do the due diligence that we wanted to do and the more and more information we were getting combined with some of the information we had previously and was publicly available combined with more and more complexities relating to the financial management and governments over a long period of time and we were just going to face challenges that were insurmountable to allow us to do actually what we wanted to do if we took over the club.”

The lower reaches of English football are littered with clubs reborn from the ashes of previous incarnations.

Maidstone, Bradford Park Avenue, Scarborough, Halifax, Chester, Darlington and Rushden & Diamonds are among those to have risen, phoenix-like, from the flames of their earlier demise.

The Premier League fans don't understand how the EFL has let Bury and others down. Says is all.

    Neil, PNE

Cannot even begin to imagine the pain that Bury fans are feeling right now - hopefully knowing the rest of the footballing world is behind you and willing you to be reborn proves to be some solace in these awful times

    Craig, FFC fan

As a Pompey fan, I remember what it was like anxiously counting down the minutes to redemption or oblivion. Mercifully we were saved at the eleventh hour. Absolutely devastated the same has not come to pass for the Bury fans - they are losing more than a Saturday afternoon; they are losing the heartbeat of a community. Stay strong friends, and we'll see you again one day.

Absolutely not, Premiership clubs should not have stepped in, they're not charities! Does it happen anywhere else in business? Only if they are a viable concern: Bury is financially ruined, no-one stepped in to save Woolworths because their debt was huge and they were not an attractive purchase. Same with Bury, and many more likely in the future. It's inevitable and sadly a part of life.

    DC

It's not down to the PL teams to bail out the likes of Bury/Bolton. It's down to the EFL, and their failure to conduct the "fit and proper" tests.. if they had done this, Mr Dale would not have been allowed to take over at Bury FC. It's horrendous though, and I hope they come back stronger than before.

Fresh&Minty: As a Walsall FC fan I remember Gigg Lane as the scene of us clinching promotion on a hot evening in 1995. We packed out the away terrace great memories. A ball boy caught the ball while still in play when we were on attack. Focus #BuryFC, external and you'll be back

Joe Williams: Really sad day for football with @buryfcofficial, external going under. The Os came so close a few years back and only a matter of time before another club did. Prompt rule changes needed to stop mercenary owners running clubs or it will happen again. But things won't change

Arron Newble: Cannot imagine how Bury fans feel today. No football fan should have to experience their club dying. Don’t understand those blaming EFL though. Blame the owner.

  8. What's going on at Bolton?published at 09:09 British Summer Time 28 August 2019

Bolton have 14 days to find a buyer or prove they have the funds to complete the season, or they will be expelled from the English Football League.

The EFL suspended the withdrawal notice while Bolton, in administration since May, negotiated a proposed takeover by Football Ventures (Whites) Limited.

It appeared the sale collapsed on Saturday, with administrators saying the club was close to liquidation.

Wanderers have lost four of their five League One and cup games this season, are without a manager and have only five senior outfield players available.

One fixture, against Doncaster, was postponed because of concerns over the welfare of youth-team players.

The EFL said administrators have until 11:59 BST on 12 September to meet the requirements.

    The clock is ticking

We've been sent this heartfelt message from a Bury fan.

Sadly they didn't leave a name, but I couldn't not post it.

From the times when i first watched the club in the manny road end at a stupidly young age moaning about how **** we were (my first ever game), to the times when Liam Robinson and David Lee were dazzling us, travelling to Bolton at both grounds for the glorious (and some not so) derbies, watching Lucketti, Butler, Johnson and so many other stars, missing the promotion match as season ticket holders, listening to the match in the swan and then somehow blagging our way into the players bar after the promotion ceremony with Stan Ternant and Sam Ellis to celebrate going up with the team, beating City at Maine Rd and seeing a fan tear up his season ticket, the volcano hot coffees in the main stand, the great songs, the familiar faces, the moments celebrating with Neville Neville, the realisation I should have worn thicker socks and gloves on another Tuesday night being snowed on as my season ticket seat was at the front of I block and had no real cover from the wintry weather. The celebrations, the defeats, the highs, the lows. The 'what the' moment as Baichung Bhutia seemed to cling to the referees legs at Blackpool in his debut like he didn’t quite know the rules, the rivalry with Rochdale, watching us play at a old Trafford, eating some god awful food at some truly great grounds, the annual trek to Radcliffe for the friendly. Wondering how Peter Swan could have such a large turning circle, to Ryan Lowe, to the Barmy Army, to lol Hugh Eaves funded it how??? To some stunning goals, to the hoof it upfield straight from kick off, to the chants of Brazil, it’s just like watching Brazil as the ball spent five minutes in the air being headed back and forth. To the joy of hugging random fans in a big piley on as we belted in the winner vs Dale to trudging home after losing on a Tuesday night away to Plymouth. To all the past players and staff and fans I salute you. All those moments are now lost to time, never to be felt again in the same way.

Plenty of debate on whether the football world could have done more to save Bury.

Do you think Premier League clubs should have stepped in to help? Or is it not their problem to solve?

It's also great to see so many fans from other EFL clubs sending in good wishes and support for Shakers fans.

Companies go out of business everyday. If the outgoings are greater than income then it is not a viable concern, football clubs are no different so why should they be treated any differently? Maybe there are simply too many football clubs, just like high street shops?

    David

Such a shame that so many millionaire ex footballers didn't follow the example of the ex United lads and put their hands in their pockets for a local team. They just looked on 'sympathetically' and let this happen to Bury. A group of them could have done a job very much like the boys of 92 whose hands were obviously tied by their involvement in Salford!

    Tom, Kent

As a life long Charlton fan, I remember still so vividly when we lost our ground and faced extinction. Can only empathise with the fans. Tragic. Like Phoenix, something may arise from this but for now, my heart goes out to them.

The Red Squirrel: Can we stop blaming The Premier League please. Only parties responsible here are the EFL, Steve Dale and previous owners.

Francis Edwards: How is this the fault of the EFL? Blaming the wrong people will not help - if clubs act up and do not obey rules that other clubs can clearly follow them they must suffer the consequences

Mike Kelcey: Sad day. It was Bury... could've been Vale or one of many other clubs. With Bolton teetering we could see a few more this season.

The EFL were sent a signed letter at 0100BST this morning with an offer to buy Bury FC.

Sources claim the EFL were aware of the offer, from a wealthy individual, when they made their announcement at 2305BST that Bury had been kicked out of the Football League.

The EFL said in their statement that 'all available options' had been explored, including 'a number of late expressions of interest'.

Sources dealing with the offer were told the EFL understood it to have been rescinded. They argued this was not the case, hence the decision to re-submit the offer, eight hours after the deadline for a resolution to Bury's future had passed.

Steve Price: I was becoming less and less interested in football but last night’s sad news from Bury FC means that’s it. I’m out. Football you’ve lost me for good

ShaunB82: As a Preston fan, Bury was my 1st ever away match. I was lucky enough to revisit this ground 3 times. You could always see the passion of the fans for their home town club and sense the family feel around the ground & town. My heart goes out to the whole of Bury.

Stu Howden: So sad to hear about Bury. But I’m not sure why anyone is blaming the EFL for this? It’s simply not fair to expect teams to be constantly bailed out or let off. It’s always the fans that suffer, but teams must work within their means and become self sustaining

Away from the drama unfolding down at Gigg Lane, a number of second-round Carabao Cup fixtures took place last night.

League Two Crawley produced a stunning display to dump top-tier side Norwich out and reach the third round for only the second time in their history.

Meanwhile, Colchester beat Crystal Palace on penalties after the game ended 0-0 and Sheffield United edged Blackburn Rovers 2-1.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa thrashed Crewe Alexandra 6-1.

Callum Gaunt: As a Bury FC fan, I have no words... but we will rise again. We have to save Gigg Lane, whatever the cost.

Ben: IF Bolton's takeover goes through, I'd like to see us offer Bury season ticket holders a section of discounted home tickets for the rest of the season, or something along those lines. No football fan should have nowhere to go on a Saturday afternoon.

P WIlliams: Feel for Bury fans. As a Swindon fan in terms of dodgy owners we've been there and got a wardrobe full of T shirts. Regarding earlier comment about Woolworths clubs aren't subject to same market forces as shops that's why fit and proper test needs better enforcement
