Oxford United had done well before Manchester City's goal and Tarique Fosu has shown some very nice touches. The Kassam Stadium is understandably a little subdued after that deflected Cancelo strike.

  2. goal

GOAL - Everton 0-1 Leicesterpublished at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    James Maddison (26 mins)

Great goal! Again it's right-back Ricardo who has space out wide, he cuts it back in a carbon copy of the earlier chance but this time James Maddison takes a touch and curls in with the outside of his foot.

    Cracking strike.

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Leicester still dominating the ball, Bernard went down in a heap holding his ankle but he's OK.

Super slick from Man City. Cancelo travels all the way from his half, gets his shot away, it deflects into the top corner. Great build-up.

  5. goal

GOAL - Oxford 0-1 Manchester Citypublished at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Joao Cancelo (22 mins)

Deadlock broken, and a lovely goal too. City play out from the back with some intricate triangles, and once it goes forwards a lay-off allows Phil Foden to free Joao Cancelo down the right.

The full-back carries it downfield, gets a shot off and it deflects up and into the back of the net.

    Manchester United 0-0 Colchester

We await a Carabao goal as Marcus Rashford hits in another good free-kick which Dean Gerken spills, but just about gathers at the second attempt.

    Oxford 0-0 Manchester City

Better from Oxford as dangerman Tariqe Fosu worms into the area and puts in a low cross/shot - Eric Garcia clears.

  8. Postpublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Oxford 0-0 Manchester City

Riyad Mahrez with a brilliant ball across the goal and Rob Dickie with some heroic defending under his own crossbar to clear. Oxford cannot get hold of the ball at all.

  9. CLOSE!published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Close! Leicester have the best chance yet as Ricardo powers down the right and cuts it back for Ayoze Perez, who leans back and smashes over.

  10. CLOSE!published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Manchester United 0-0 Colchester

He's getting the hang of these isn't he, Marcus Rashford twangs a free-kick from the angle of the penalty area narrowly, narrowly wide!

    Great hit.

  11. Tough conditions in Oxfordpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at The Kassam Stadium

It's a filthy night in Oxford, with rain and a swirling wind but manager Karl Robinson will be happy with the start his League One side have made.

Oxford United are putting City under pressure and making it competitive. City will want to get their passing game going a bit more.

  12. Postpublished at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Oxford 0-0 Manchester City

City slickers, they free left-back Angelino into that familiar pocket of space just outside the area but his cross is shut down. From the corner, Phil Foden puts a good ball in but Josh Ruffels defends well at the far post.

  13. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Under way at OT.

  14. Postpublished at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

It's setlled down a bit, Leicester seeing more of the possession now. Duncan will want a bit more up and at 'em stuff.

    Oxford 0-0 Manchester City

Claudio Bravo can usually be relied upon for comedy value, and he shanks a ball out of play when trying to dink it out to right-back Joao Cancelo. Tough for the defender.

  16. Postpublished at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Everton have started well, Richarlison pokes the ball around Kasper Schmeichel but the Leicester defence are able to get back and clear.

  17. Postpublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Oxford 0-0 Manchester City

Phil Foden, making a third straight start for City, wins a free-kick in midfield. Foden scored at Oxford a year or so ago if my sketchy memory serves.

Raheem Sterling is lining up the free-kick from a mile out. And puts it well, well wide.

  18. Postpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Everton win an early corner which Dominic Calvert-Lewin heads wide, before Kasper Schmeichel has to be alert to sweep up from Alex Iwobi. Lively start.

Manchester City legend and club ambassador Mike Summerbee and former Oxford United player Jeremy Charles laid a bouquet and a wreath at one end of the stadium, and there is also a mural behind the goal commemorating Jim Smith's achievements.

Current manager Karl Robinson described Smith as "the most iconic figure in the club's history."
