Brad Storch: It’ll be interesting to see whether Man City put even more into winning the Champions League this season - or whether Guardiola goes in summer as he won’t have chance fulfil his ambition for a fair while. Ban needs to be upheld or there’s no value to FFP whatsoever.

  2. Game number 42published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo has kept his programme notes short and sweet. He says his side spent last week in Spain and have “returned fresh, both physically and mentally, ahead of tonight’s challenge.”

Just as well really, given this is game number 42 of a season that started back in July.

  3. 'Uefa have to be consistent in their challenging of others now'published at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Uefa have to be careful that they're not just making an example of Manchester City.

The way the club have spent the money, they've had to accelerate themselves in the English game to challenge where they want to be. There will be other clubs that have spent big so if they're going to make an example of Manchester City that's fine, but they've got to be consistent in their challenging of others teams.

It'll be fascinating to see the outcome of the appeal because Manchester City have made it clear in no uncertain terms what they think of the decision.

Michael Reid: Is anyone who isn't actually a city 'fan' disappointed by this? Great to see some action against the teams not abiding by FFP. Let's just hope the premier league follows suit.

Pity the live footy tonight. We neutrals were looking forward to what should be an exciting match, now unless your at the game, tonight will be all about Man City

  5. 'City will take it in their stride'published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Only a couple of months ago, Pep came out and said he'd took the club as far as he could, then a couple of months later he says he's ready for the challenge, so I personal thought he would've gone in the summer but he's came out and said he's looking forward to next season so I think has been aware there's been a problem there.

They've issued a strong statement to say they are going to try to correct this decision and I'm sure they will do but regarding the club, you've got to look and say 'how far has this club come?' Pep Guardiola will be aware of the prep and the planning - will the recruitment be a little bit harder? Yes it will but if any club and any owners can take this on, then I think it's Manchester City.

We've seen how quickly they have grown and what type of backing they have, so they will take it in their stride. As for Guardiola, now this is a challenge for him. He's got a good squad and for any coach to take this on and develop players, it's Pep Guardiola.

Rhys: 100% sure CAS will overturn this. City have been working on this appeal for a while with one of the top law firms in the world. They have a really strong case and there is no doubt this will not be the final outcome.

Gwyl Davey: With this decision I feel UEFA are forcing the top clubs closer and closer to creating their own European super league, seems very shortsighted by them - as their power wanes and the elite clubs grow...

  7. 'The ramifications are huge'published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

The statement is as empathetic as you can get from Manchester City. They will be hoping there is a degree of impartiality in the final outcome because if not the ramifications are huge.

Straight away you think about Pep Guardiola's future and then how do you attract top players, and the loss of revenue. I was told that the difference between the Champions League knockouts to Europa League this season is £70m so equate that to not even qualifying at all. These are all the questions that will now be being asked by everyone in football. The ramifications are huge.

  9. 'Exceptionally serious'published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Guardian's David Conn on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Uefa have said in their statement that they have found City in serious preach of deceiving Uefa.

"The perception from the internal City emails that were published in 2019 was that City had overstated the sponsorship of the stadium itself and the academy by the Abu Dhabi airline Etihad and in fact, the club’s owner Sheik Mansour, was largely funding that sponsorship.

"But City have vehemently denied that all the way through but the reason I’m saying it’s not surprising, is the fact that City were charged, shows the initial Uefa body didn’t believe City and in their view, they have been ratified and they have found that City have mislead Uefa and that is exceptionally serious."

    2. There will be more legal action in this case.

    3. City do not regard case as being over.

    4. Club do not intend to brief or leak information as they accused Uefa of doing as per CAS documentation reported yesterday.

    5. They are confident of a successful outcome once the matter is dealt with by an independent body.

  16. 'I don't think Pep will leave'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from the Athletic's Sam Lee: "It does sound very plausible about Pep Guardiola leaving. But he has always said about how loyal he is. Txiki Begiristain was part of the team that trusted him and gave him the leg up at Barcelona and Pep has always said that it’s a two-way street. Whether he’ll walk out on the back of that, I’m not sure. It sounds plausible and I wouldn’t be 100% surprised if he did, but I don’t think he will."

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Athletic's Manchester City reporter Sam Lee on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The club failing to throw it out wasn't seen as a setback, they saw it as a bonus if they managed to do that. The announcement was definitely going to be in December so it has been delayed. From a journalist point of view, we started to wonder what that was about and we were 'we don't like this'.

"It's a very strange one. PSG had a similar case, but they were found that their valuation was pretty much legit by an independent body. Part of City's argument will be look at how they treated PSG in comparison.

"With the appeal still to come, there will still be twists and turns to come in this story."

  19. 'Disappointed but not surprised' - Man City statementpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

    Manchester City

Manchester City have released the following statement after Uefa's decision to ban the club from the Champions League for two seasons.

The club say they are "disappointed but not surprised" by the announcement. They added they "always anticipated" that they would need "an independent body to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position".

They go on to call the process "flawed" and that the "consistently leaked" nature of the process left them in "little doubt in the result he would deliver". They have already formally complained to the Uefa Disciplinary body.

They conclude "simply put, this is a case initiated by Uefa, prosecuted by Uefa and judged by Uefa" and they will now "pursue an impartial judgement as quickly as possible and will therefore go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity".

    Full statement is here, external.
