How has Nigel Pearson got things back on track at Watford? Rules and regulation. Law and order - he's laid that down. Pearson has shaken up the dressing room and told them what to do by being honest and saying 'look we are in a relegation fight'. He has got Troy Deeney on board as well which is a big thing. Troy wears the armband, is the catalyst for them to work hard and please the fans.

  9. Can Wolves make the top four?published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2020

    Watford v Wolves (15:00 GMT)

If Watford are to continue their upsurge in form then they will have to work hard against a Wolves team who lost for the first time in eight away league outings against Liverpool on 29 December.

This might be Wolves' 35th game of the season - having played 11 more times than today's opponents - but they are pushing hard for a European place and perhaps the top four is not too lofty a target given that the established top six is not very established this season.

Fourth-placed Chelsea's draw earlier at Brighton means Wolves can close that gap to three points with victory today.

  10. Deeney the talismanpublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2020

    Watford v Wolves (15:00 GMT)

Nigel Pearson has won two of his past three Premier League games in charge, doubling the number of league wins this season of his two predecessors (Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores) combined.

No doubt he will be grateful for the return of Troy Deeney, though. Missing through injury for most of the season, the striker has returned to goalscoring form by grabbing three goals in his past three games, contributing to those two wins against Manchester United and Aston Villa.

I've seen Watford in the flesh a couple of times this season, and while they have played some nice football, the bullish Deeney gives them an extra dimension.

  11. Great escape part two?published at 14:50

    Watford v Wolves (15:00 GMT)

Is Nigel Pearson about to engineer his second great escape?

Prior to taking charge at Vicarage Road, Watford looked doomed with nine points from 16 games and were six points from safety. Now with two wins and a draw from their past three matches, they are four points adrift and looking up.

It makes you wonder if he can recreate the heroics of the 2014-15 season when he led Leicester City to survival.
