Turkey may be viewing today's game as their best chance to win points, but what do the experts think?

BBC Sport football expert Mark Lawrenson is taking on BBC Radio 5 Live's pundits, presenters and commentators to predict the outcome of every game at the 2020 European Championship.

Vicki Sparks is top after the first round of group games were completed on Tuesday, while Lawro is bottom of the pile.

Lawro is predicting a 2-1 win for Turkey today, while table-topping Vicki goes for a 1-0 win for Wales.

I thought there might have been a change in the middle of the park to try and gain more possession and get a foothold on the game. Ethan Ampadu could have been a good option. But he's stuck with it and shown confidence in the players that he's picked. Let's hope they justify their selection.

There surely can’t be any crazier games than when Wales last met Turkey, a World Cup qualifier in Istanbul in August 1997. Described as “one of the most amazing international games of all-time,” the 6-4 defeat came during the much maligned reign of manager Bobby Gould.

“6-4 is not a normal score,” said former (and indeed future) Wales boss John Toshack, who had not long taken up a role as coach of Turkish side Besiktas at the time. It was certainly not a normal game, with both sides guilty of defensive errors.

Wales were trailing 2-0 after just eight minutes through goals from Hakan Sukur and Saffet Akyuzbut.

Nathan Blake and a cracking Robbie Savage volley brought Gould’s side level before Dean Saunders scored to put Wales ahead.

In a topsy-turvy game, Hakan Sukur equalised only for Andy Melville’s early second-half goal to restore Wales’ lead. But Oguz Cetin and two further goals from talisman Sukur completed Turkey’s comeback.

A Page in history

Turkey were the opposition when Wales boss Robert Page made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier at Cardiff’s old National Stadium in December 1996.

Under Bobby Gould, a Wales side including Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Speed and a certain Vinnie Jones were held to a 0-0 draw by Turkey, who included Tugay and Hakan Sukur in their team.

A goalless draw all but ended Wales’ hopes of qualifying in 1996 and a similar result today might not be enough for Page's side to advance in this tournament.

'Result will take care of itself with good performance'

On building on the draw with Switzerland: "We set our foundations. We were hardworking, we showed resilience and we can come back from difficult situations against a good team."

On how Turkey will differ: "They'd have looked at the Italy game and our game and seen this as a game they must win. We are expecting an extremely tough game. They'll come out of the traps we'll expect them to start bright. We've got to be prepared for that. As the game opens up with the pace we've got in the team it should make for an entertaining game, but we are fully prepared for the challenge that's ahead."

On this being the best chance of qualifying: "It's the next game. It's the second game of three that we have. We're realistic and know Italy will be a tough game and a big challenge but anything can happen on the day. We're fully focused on tonight's game and giving the performance, and if we can give the level of performance we know we can then the result takes care of itself."

Wales squad thoughts with Eriksen

Wales have been sending their best wishes to Christian Eriksen after he suffered a cardiac arrest against Finland.

'Fine under the circumstances'

This is one to put a smile on your face.

Former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen says he is "fine under the circumstances" and posted a picture from his hospital bed with a thumbs-up as he made his first comments since suffering a cardiac arrest.

The Denmark talisman, 29, collapsed in Saturday's game with Finland and had to be resuscitated on the pitch.

Eriksen has thanked fans from around the world for their support.

I think it's not a must win but we'd all like a win. If we come away with a draw we'll feel a little bit disappointed.

Turkey obviously prided themselves on their defensive record and the clean sheets.

It wasn't a great opener for them, they kind of threw that game away and are going to target this one. I can only imagine the public in Turkey are not happy with that performance.

While Baku is the furthest away of the Euro 2020 grounds for Rob Page and Wales, it is just a hop, skip and a jump through Armenia for Turkey.

This afternoon's game will effectively be a home crowd for Turkey, with Azerbaijan sharing the motto of "two states, one nation".

But Gareth Bale is hoping to use the hostilities of an away game to spur Wales to victory, and "silence" the crowd in the process.

'Wales can use atmosphere to their benefit'

Former Wales manager Mark Hughes believes playing in front of a sizeable Turkish support will “benefit” Robert Page’s side in Baku this evening.

Hughes described Galatasaray’s old Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul as the most intimidating atmosphere he experienced during his playing career.

But the ex-Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich player believes the noisy atmosphere in Baku’s Olympic Stadium can help Wales.

“Probably one of the reasons that maybe the performance against the Swiss was just a little bit low key is that we didn’t seem to have that edge to our play,” Hughes told 5 Live Breakfast.

“I just think 30,000 odd there baying against you, that can just up your performance levels because you’ve got to stand up and be counted.

“I actually don’t see it as a negative that they [Turkey] will have huge support. I feel we can use that to our own benefit.”
