Brilliant from Bale, a fantastically weighted through pass. I think Soyuncu did just enough to cover the angle.

It was great skill from Ramsey, he opted for the near post but could have gone for the far post.

  2. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

    Turkey 0-0 Wales

    Huge chance.

Gareth Bale's pass split the defence and Aaron Ramsey opted to shoot, but Ugurcan Cakir saved at the near post.

You thought a goal was coming.

Should Ramsey have crossed? Shot across goal? He probably picked the worst option, unfortunately for Wales.

All to play for tonight, I think the loser well and truly starts to pack their bags to go home.

What a pleasant change from the soulless lack of atmosphere from the opening draw against Switzerland.

The home crowd are waving Turkey and Azerbaijan flags in tandem and creating a great noise - but they respected Wales' anthem too.

  9. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Turkey 0-0 Wales

Portuguese referee Artur Manuel Soares Dias gets us under way in Baku.

There are thousands of Turkish fans in the ground, as we have been discussing, so the game might as well be in Istanbul.

Wales' first job will be to try and silence this partisan crowd.

This is a big, big game.

  11. Wales aim to end 40-year waitpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 16 June 2021

It's been a long time since Wales tasted success against Turkey.

Wales boss Robert Page was only six at the time and of course none of the current squad were even born.

Still a victory tonight would keep a few smiles on faces. Interestingly, current Turkey boss Senol Gunes was in goal for that game 40 years ago.

You can tell this is a big game for Turkey because the country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is at the Baku Olympic Stadium tonight.

President Erdogan has been meeting Azerbaijan's president, Ilham Aliyev, this week.

Bit of trivia for you: President Erdogan was the best man at former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil's wedding in 2019.

That proved controversial in Germany, for whom Ozil made 92 appearances.

  15. Can you cheer for Wales in the pub?published at 16:54 British Summer Time 16 June 2021

    Turkey v Wales (17:00 BST)

Standing proudly, pint in hand, shoulder to shoulder, bars are normally packed with fans singing the national anthem when Wales play.

But as the Euro 2020 finals continue with Wales due to face Turkey in Baku on Wednesday, the atmosphere is much more tame.

Due to Covid, the Welsh government had urged people not to sing or shout in order to stop the virus spreading.

One fan said not being able to sing the national anthem was "an alien concept".

  16. 'Huge opportunity for Rob Page'published at 16:53 British Summer Time 16 June 2021

    Turkey v Wales (17:00 BST)

    Mark Hughes
Former Wales manager on BBC One

I think Rob will see this as a huge opportunity for himself. He's a proud Welshman and he wants to do well for Wales, but he wants to do well for Rob Page himself.

In terms of his career he's always taken the next big step and this is another big step for him and we wish him well.
