Ryan Steer: Awful decision by the ref and VAR, how do they think Lovren is meant to jump?
John Dunthorne: If penalties are given for those, there will be six every game.

Simon Atkins: If you catch someone with an elbow anywhere else on the pitch, it's a free-kick, so why wouldn't it be a penalty? Intentional or not, his elbow caught the guy in the face.
Adam Salter: A lot of debate around the Czech penalty. What’s not helped Lovren is that his arm is bent, driven backwards, and his elbow has caved Schick’s nose in with blood everywhere. It just felt reckless. Had that been anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a free-kick.
HALF-TIME
Croatia 0-1 Czech Republic
And it's the Czechs who go in at the break with a lead. Nobody can deny them it. They've been the better team by a mile.
However, what appears we can debate is the penalty award that earned them it. More of that to come in a second...

A pot shot from the edge of the box comes from Andrej Kramaric. It looks as if it may just squirrel it's way in but Vaclik gets down low to stop it.
For all they have been outplayed, Croatia have not been without their chances here.
All is forgiven...

Here's a glimpse of Schick's earlier miss. Although, he'll not be bothering now...

You just knew it - Patrik Schick scores from 12 yards on this occasion, calm confident penalty. Sends the goalkeeper the wrong way, Schick goes left, he dives right. It's a cool penalty and the Czechs have their noses in front.
Croatia have got plenty to do now.
What a miss!
Croatia 0-1 Czech Republic
Oh. My. Word.
Croatia are through on goal within seconds of the restart. The ball falls to AC Milan's Ante Rebic, but he wildly lashes it wide from around 10 yards. What a let off.

Good penalty. Whether it should have been awarded or not it's a very well taken penalty. The confidence. They always say if it touches the side-netting the keeper has very little chance.

Patrik Schick (Penalty)
It's in! Schick steps up to fire the ball to the keeper's right and send him the wrong way.

He's trying to explain to the referee he was using his arms for leverage. I'm very surprised at that. Very surprised. They might have got it wrong. For me that's not a penalty.

A huge cheer goes up inside Hampden with Kovacic protesting to the ref, who predictably is having none of it. Now Modric is having a word.
Schick places the ball on the spot...

VAR check?
Croatia 0-0 Czech Republic
Uh oh. The corner comes to nothing, but Patrik Schick is rolling about in agony with a burst nose. He jumped to contest a corner and looked to get an elbow from Dejan Lovren.
Is VAR going to look at this?

Paul Higgit: Croatia playing outdated football. Rigid, slow, no pressing. They've not progressed in the last 3 years. Not sure if it's stubbornness or whether the aging key players can't play with tempo.

Croatia 0-0 Czech Republic
Croatia trying their best to get a bit more joy. Certainly, in midfield they are seeing more of the ball. The trio of Brekalo, Kovacic and Modric are starting to click and find pockets, but there's very little end product. Modric is having to come within 10 yards of a centre-half to collect the ball he has so few options.
The Czech fans in the stadium are buzzing. How are the Czech supporters at home doing?

The keepers haven't been called as of yet. No diving about. Their kits are perfectly clean.

An encouraging sign or two now from Croatia, Luca Modric getting on the ball a bit more. But the Czechs have had the better start in possession.
