Former Scotland international Graeme Souness knows a thing or two about bossing midfield.

Speaking on ITV4, Souness says: "Croatia will keep possession better than England. We need to keep Modric quiet, dominate the ball and stay on the front foot.

"Being threatening but still defending well - that's the challenge tonight.

"You don't have to win it in the first half. Try to play like we did at Wembley and we will create chances."

Well of course I'm at Wembley. I mean, where else would I possibly be tonight? Don't worry I've got STV on the iPad and I'll let you know if anything exciting happens here. The England fans appear delighted that Jack Grealish has come in as well as Harry Maguire, Bukayo Saka and Kyle Walker, though the continued absence of Jadon Sancho from the starting XI is puzzling many. Ach well, who cares?

Scotland made a much better stab at qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, losing just once in a group that included Croatia and Belgium.

But four draws, including two with the Croats, resulted in a third place finish.

Kevin Gallacher found a first-half leveller in the away fixture but a home game we needed to win ended goalless, with Croatia topping the section.

There was a also 1-1 friendly draw at Hampden in 2008, with Kenny Miller equalising after Niko Kranjcar’s early goal.

Now here’s some heartening news. Scotland have never lost in five meetings with Croatia.

In a disappointing World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign, there were just three wins from 10 games, but two of those came against Croatia.

Robert Snodgrass scored the only goal in Zagreb and the same player was on target at Hampden, along with Steven Naismith.

Croatia still managed to finish second in the group and got to Brazil via the play-offs.

The temperature in Glasgow is cooling but in the stands the Tartan Army are just warming up.

Loch Lomond is booming out, people are on their feet, singing their hearts out. Something rather emotional about the atmosphere inside the national stadium. It's not just been 23 hard years for the Scotland team, but it's been a traumatic 15 months for so many in the country.

Regardless of what happens tonight, the impact of being at this tournament is clear with every hoarse voice inside Hampden.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke, speaking to STV, says: "The only decision was whether to stick with the same back three or move Scott McTominay into midfield - I think it was quite an easy decision.

"The start of the game might be a little bit cagey - but I've been wrong before.

"The crowd have got a big part to play tonight. We need them from the first minute to the last. I know they'll be there for us."

Clarke then can't hear the following question. Hampden's up for it!

This is just the third European Championship Scotland has been at and as you can see below they have managed two wins from their eight games so far.

However, another way of looking at it is they have a 100% record in final group games.

At Euro 92, the CIS (the last throes of the Soviet Union) were hammered 3-0 in Norrkoping.

Four years later, at Villa Park, Ally McCoist scored the only goal against Switzerland.

On both occasions, those last hurrahs were not enough to earn a place in the next round.
