  1. Spain beat Croatia in an epic

    Croatia 3-5 Spain

Spain reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 after an epic encounter with Croatia in Copenhagen.

Luis Enrique's side were rocked when Croatia substitutes Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic scored twice in the final five minutes to come back from 3-1 down and force extra time.

Striker Alvaro Morata silenced his critics when he thumped in Spain's fourth goal before Mikel Oyarzabal added a fifth.

In a hint of what was to come, goalkeeper Unai Simon failed to control Pedri's 49-yard back pass, presenting Croatia with the lead after 20 minutes.

That bizarre own goal sparked a response from Spain though, with Pablo Sarabia thumping in an equaliser, Cesar Azpilicueta heading in another and Ferran Torres making it 3-1.

  2. 'Boy, we had to suffer'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

    Spain

Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta:"Boy, we had to suffer there. It's been a few tournaments since we went through a knockout match. But today we 'broke the ice' against the World Cup runners-up. It wasn't great to be scored against twice late in normal time, but we were the better team in extra time and we deserve to go through."

  3. 'Spain are great to watch'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

Former England striker Ian Wright, speaking on ITV: "Spain are great to watch. And considering that everyone is going into the tournament talking about the chances they are missing, you just have to think about what they will do once they start taking their chances.

"It was a fantastic goal by Morata. It was one of those kind of goals you feel a bit of redemption for him. It wasn't an easy take. It was a fantastic ball over to him. Brilliant touch and a super finish from him. It is a lot harder than the chance he missed.

"It was at a time when they really needed that, if he misses that, you really would start to feel for him but it was a great, great finish.

"The goalkeeper deserves a lot of credit, he showed a lot of mental strength in this game."

  4. 'Great advert for Euro 2020'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

Former Scotland midfielder Graeme Souness on ITV:

"We've been waiting to the competition to come alive and it did tonight. That was a great advert for the Euros and a great game for the neutral. Goals, mistakes, some quality. That was a really good performance by Spain and let's enjoy this. That was the best game in the competition so far."

  5. 'Morata made things happen'

    Morata

I loved Alvaro Morata's approach to this game, I mean he's got criticism in the past for being laid back and feeling sorry for himself, but he's made things happen today.

He's played every role that a striker could play today.

He's dropped in deep, he scored a goal and he's created chances. I think he had a role to play in that Azpilicueta goal, he made that run across the front post. That run is so underrated in football.

He'll be really delighted, he'll be exhausted because he ran himself down, but what a player.

  6. Goodbye

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

    It's time to go, folks.

What an incredible, breathless, pulsating match. I'm off to lie down in a dark room for the next few hours.

I'm going to leave you with the best of the reaction.

    Until next time.

  7. 'We fought until the end'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

    Croatia

Croatia's Mislav Orsic: "I would like to thank the fans – it was a pleasure to play in front of them. We fought until the very end, but they scored from almost every chance and deservedly won."

  8. 'Boy, we had to suffer'

  9. 'I salute the character of the team'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

    Spain

Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta: "What an incredible game. I'm happy with the victory for Spain.

"I salute the character of this team, their personality, their always believing in what they do and how they do it, how they came back and how they've overcome all the difficulties that they've had throughout the whole tournament and today.

"I'm happy with all of Luis Enrique's subs. Dani Olmo made the difference especially today, but Luis Enrique has done well getting everyone involved in everything the squad has achieved so far."

  10. 'Total confidence in Simon'

    FT: Croatia 3-5 Spain

    Spain

Spain captain Sergio Busquets: "We had chances to finish the game off quite early on but we showed character throughout. When Croatia changed their system, they flooded the pitch high up and we didn't adjust quickly enough.

"Unai Simon knows he's got our total confidence. The goal was bad luck but his mentality is very laidback while remaining ambitious, and he showed that today. He was ultra-secure after the goal and made some top saves."

    Croatia

Croatia have been such a joy to watch. They've obviously gone out tonight, but they've played such a big part in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.

Their attitude and their mentality to believe so much in themselves and each other is so admirable.
