Jordan Nobbs' dad was a no nonsense defender for Hartlepool United. Nobbs jr is much more cultured. She sets England off on another counter attack but Georgia Stanway's shot is blocked.

Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp have switched sides in the front three. Lots of changes going on and England look more fluid and less predictable for it. Still need that break through.

Speaking of being comfortable on the ball, Jordan Nobbs is the coolest woman on the east coast as she calmly helps her side play out from the back.

A moment later she has a word or two to say to the assistant referee after an offside call. It's fair to say Nobbs didn't agree with the call.

With England having the extra player in midfield, they just have to be patient and find an opening. All three of England's midfielders are comfortable on the ball.

  5. Postpublished at 22 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

This was the first of the two early chances England have had. Looking at it again, it was a pretty good save from Sakiko Ikeda.

Phil Neville is stood right in front of the press box and we can hear him shouting instructions.

A few moments ago he gestured to Chloe Kelly to press more on the right and just now, told Steph Houghton and Millie Bright to get closer to each other.

Phil Neville is out in his technical area with his arms folded. It sounds like he's barking at the England players to press.

Already, England are creating more than they did in 90 minutes against the USA on Thursday. That was Everton's Chloe Kelly - making her first start - with the ball through and Bethany England, who is usually so clinical in the WSL, just couldn't put it away. There's space though and this young England front line are taking advantage of it.

    England 0-0 Japan

England are growing into this now as Jordan Nobbs whips in a cross. Risa Shimizu gets an important head in to prevent Lauren Hemp getting in at the back post.

The form that she's in, you would expect Bethany England to score from that position. She certainly looks sharp, getting herself into those positions, but it was too close to the keeper.

    England 0-0 Japan

It should be 1-0 to England.

Japan make another sloppy mistake at the back and Bethany England is played through on goal. She has been banging these chances in for Chelsea in the WSL but this time the finish is too close to the keeper who is able to save.

  12. Postpublished at 13 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Japan have been the better team in these early stages. They have been more composed on the ball.

As I say that Millie Bright puts a long ball out of play.

That strike from Hina Sugita dipped at the worst place and Ellie Roebuck was scrambling to get across to it on her left. The referee gave a corner but did Roebuck touch it? It came off the post, that's for sure. Let off for England.

  14. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 10 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Almost an opener! It's a powerful, dipping effort from range from Hina Sugita for Japan. It clatters into the base of the post but did Ellie Roebuck get a crucial touch? The referee gives a corner.

  15. Postpublished at 9 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Both sides are trying to play good football. Japan play it really well out from the back but the through ball lets them down.

    Sue Smith

Japan do play a very high line, and it's often very disorganised so if England can get the ball through to the pace of Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly, they've certainly got a chance.

  17. Postpublished at 6 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Japan had a bit of a nightmare at the back in their 3-1 loss against Spain. That will hardly settle any nerves.

A reminder a defeat for either side today would all-but end any hopes of winning the tournament.

What a chance that was for Lauren Hemp! Bethany England, called into the starting line-up ahead of Ellen White, with the through ball and Hemp's touch set her up brilliantly. This is only her second start so that will give her some confidence.

  19. GOOD SAVE!published at 4 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

A big early chance from England. Lauren Hemp - chasing her first senior goal for the Lionesses - steals the ball off Japan defender Risa Shimizu at the back. Hemp is clean through but Sakiko Ikeda makes the save.

    Sue Smith

It was a nervy start by England, a poor clearance by Steph Houghton and you can see that Japan want to start well. They'll be really disappointed with their performance against Spain and want to put things right.
